2.3. Conducting a survey
The purpose of this paragraph is to describe the survey conducted and analyse its
results. Students of 9-11 grades were accepted in the survey.
The survey was conducted
with the aim of establishing whether students carry out correspondence in English,
whether they use abbreviations in correspondence, what abbreviations they use.
In order to understand whether the students of our school are familiar with
abbreviations, we conducted a questionnaire among 40 students in grades 9-11.
As a result of the survey, the following results were obtained:
• the majority of students have a positive attitude to correspondence with foreign
people and believe that their level of English is sufficient to carry on correspondence
• students are familiar with different types of written abbreviations, and most of
them can be attributed to the computer sphere
• most of the respondents are in correspondence with foreigners on social
networks and use abbreviations in correspondence
• students were asked to write the abbreviations they use in correspondence and,
as it turned out, most of them belong to the computer field.
This survey was analysed as a percentage, diagrams are attached. (Appendix 5)
19
From the analysis of the questionnaire, it follows that the students are familiar
with a lot of written abbreviations in English. Students can easily understand the
abbreviations they use. Despite this fact, it is necessary to check whether the students
can decipher the written abbreviations proposed to them, as well as the entire message,
written in short form.
Systematizing all the information on the use of abbreviations in English, we
conducted another sociological survey among students of our school aged 14 to 17
years. Students answered 3 questions focused on establishing the reason for the use of
abbreviations in correspondence and they were asked to decipher 20 abbreviations of
words of different types in order to determine the level of understanding of the
abbreviations used. These abbreviations were taken from correspondence on social
networks. Below is a list of questions and abbreviations that make up the survey.
1. Why do you shorten words in correspondence?
a) It saves time
b) Out of habit (abbreviations are used in everyday communication)
c) Too lazy to write the whole word
d) Saves time
66% of the respondents use abbreviations because they are too lazy to write a whole
word, 20% out of habit, admitting that frequently used abbreviations already
completely replace the use of whole words and for 14% of respondents this saves
time.
2. Can you understand all abbreviations?
a) yes, always
b) no, not always
c) more often I understand
d) I don't understand more often
18% of the respondents say “no, not always”, but 82% more often understand
what is written.
20
3. With whom do you use abbreviations in communication?
a) relatives
b) friends / acquaintances
c) peers
d) people older than you.
60% of respondents use abbreviations only with friends and acquaintances; 25%
use in communication with peers, and 15% use abbreviations in correspondence with
relatives. (Appendix 6)
It should be noted that students under the age of 17 use abbreviations more often
and understand their meanings. Older students use abbreviations less often, while only
understanding the most frequently used and most popular abbreviations. However, the
tendency towards frequent use of abbreviations in correspondence is observed among
all surveyed students.
After analysing the answers of the surveyed students, we found that 78% can
decipher the proposed abbreviations, respectively, they understand this format of
communication, and 22% cannot always understand what is written. Most often,
difficulties in understanding arose when decoding English-language phrases rapidly
entering the Russian language.
In the course of our research, we came to the conclusion that students aged 14-17
are quite active in using abbreviations in SMS and Internet correspondence. The process
of using abbreviations in correspondence is very dynamic. At first, this can form a
conflict and not understanding when communicating, and later on, the use of
abbreviations becomes part of everyday life, which characterizes vocabulary as the most
mobile level of the language system. Note that all the abbreviations discussed above are
often used in writing. The main principle of messages and Internet correspondence is
the maximum meaning for the minimum time spent.
21
According to the results of our social survey, it was found that young people aged
14-17 years old use abbreviations in SMS and Internet correspondence, understand
frequently used word abbreviations and can, by analogy with familiar abbreviations,
understand the meaning of an unfamiliar abbreviation. It follows from this that
reductions are tightly included in our social activity. Abbreviations are beginning to be
used frequently in our communication in everyday life. This is a convenient and quick
way to convey information in a minimum of time. And nevertheless, it seems to us that
this should not go beyond the scope of correspondence, so as not to lose the beauty and
power of the Kazakh word in abbreviations.
