Although, as noted, abbreviations are acceptable in all English language genres,
they nevertheless often arise at the colloquial level and, often at the level of slang, the
dictionaries of which are replete with a variety of abbreviations. I would especially like
to note the computer jargon. The abbreviation in computer jargon is represented by
various types: truncation of the end part of a word: semi from semicolons, jock from
jockey, quest from question; truncating the leading part of the word Net from the
Internet. [4; 32]
There are many types of acronyms and abbreviations used in forums and chat
rooms. In our work, we relied on the types identified by E.M. Dubenets. She divides all
abbreviations into two main groups: graphic and lexical. However, another separate
group of abbreviations stands out between them - initial abbreviations. Also in the
language there are such linguistic phenomena as apocops and apheresis, which consist
in the omission of a word.
Classifications of lexical abbreviations in the English language are numerous.
Here are some of them.
L.I. Sapogova considers the following types of contractions: [3]
1) syntactic:
a) semantic-syntactic (public - public house, Liberals -Liberal party);
b) morphological-syntactic (sitters - baby-sitter, char - char woman);
2) phonomorphological (doc - doctor, mike - microphone, pub - public house, noncom -
noncommissioned officer);
3) phonographic (Dr - doctor, Sgt - sergeant, sec - second, I. G.-Inspector-General,
NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization);
4) mixed (a-bomb - atom-bomb, scific - scientific fiction, Eurasia - Europa and Asia).
The authors of the book “A Grammar of Contemporary English” classify
abbreviations into three types: Clipping, Blends, Acronyms [2]. The Clipping section
covers:
a) abbreviation of the first part of the word (phone - telephone);
b) abbreviation of the end of the word, which is more common than abbreviation of the
beginning (exam - examination);
16
c) contraction both at the beginning and at the end of a word, which is rare (flu -
influenca, fridge - refrigerator).
The section “Blends” includes words like bit - binary + digit, breathalyser - breath +
analyzer.
