Abstract. The article considers student self-government as the component of patriotic
education in the system of higher education. The author analyses the role of patriotism in the
system of civil identity and reveals the mechanism of the development of patriotic consciousness
by means of young people involvement into various forms of creative social activity. The results
of the study indicate that there is an interrelation between the level of students’ inclusion in
public life of higher education institutions and the development of socially important personal
qualities.
