FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE OF STONES WITH DRILLED HOLES
Annotation
New materials about stone artifacts which were found at the Northern slopes of the Zailiyskiy Alatau are
introduced in the article into scientific circulation. These are stones of round or spherical shape weighing 1-1.5 kg
with drilled holes. These products are fixed in the materials of ancient settlements and in the barrows of the Early
Iron Age of the region. The research of their functional purpose leads to the reconstruction of the ancient tradition
of cooking without the direct impact of fire on the dishes. This method existed from the earliest stages of the
producing economy up to the period of Modern times, which is reflected in both historical and ethnographic
descriptions, as well as in literary works.
