Abstract:  the  contemporary  Kazakh  theatre  is  analyzed  in  the  context  of
development  of  Turkic  stage  culture  based  on  the  theatre  performances  of  the
International  Theatre  Festival  of  Turkic  people  “Nauryz”.  Key  words:  theatre,
festival, theatre performance, Turkic culture, stage directing, theatre process.

российскую  «новую  драму»    -  «Down way»    О.

ELEMENTS OF ARCHAIC DANCING PLASTICITY IN
MONUMENTS OF MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL CULTURE OF
KAZAKHSTAN
Love to art, aspiration to the finest since ancient times promoted the birth of the
special phenomenon in the sphere of spiritual development of the person throughout
millennia - rock carvings, petroglyphs, frescoes.
Petroglyphs  -  a  phenomenon  of  cultural  heritage  of  Kazakhstan,  a  universal
source in studying of development and formation of human consciousness, outlook
and  attitude,  religious  views,  writing  and  spiritual  improvement.  Monuments  of
monumental  petroglyphic  graphics,  the  stamped  frescoes  in  caves  and  necropolis
reflected the surrounding reality, daily life, world outlook, and also represented the
accumulated  information  which  carried  out  functions  of  semiotic  and
communicative system. Owing to data of archeology we now have the reliable idea
of  the  chronological  range  of  dancing  culture  existence  in  the  territory  of  Central
Asia. The dance traces back to an era of a primitive-communal system. A number of
material culture monuments relating to III-I thousand BC militate to the fact. In its
turn the dance accompanied the scenes of hunting, wars, labor processes, and also
found  a  place  in  graphic  activity  of  the  ancient  person.  It  was  the  dance  that
transformed the natural movements of the person and received the new generalized
dancing form, gained rhythmic symmetry and emotional expressiveness.
In  turn,  petroglyphs  are  the  media  coded  in  zoo-anthropomorphous  images,
"which  deciphering  keys  were  known  only  in  the  environment  of  a  certain
sociocultural community of a concrete historical era" [1, p. 8].
Nowadays  the  work  of  the  young  PhD  Dosbatyrov  Daulet  Kurmanaliyevich
stands  out  among  scientific  addresses  in  attempt  to  decipher  petroglyphs  [2].  His

69
work  included  graphic  artifacts  to  the  scientific  research  device  for  studying  the
problem of circus art genesis (in search of acrobatics elements) in the subsoil of the
most ancient sacral actions. We do not deny the possibility of this version, but we
consider  that  plasticity  and  dance  were  paramount  as  the  accompaniment  of  all
active process of mankind.
A huge interest to our research are the petroglyphic artifacts of antiquity with
plasticity elements which militate to existence of syncretic dancing creativity in the
tribes  living  in  the  III-I  millennia  BC.  The  works  of  A.Kh.Margulan  [3],  A.N.
Bernshtam  [4],  K.A.  Akishev  [5],  A.G.  Maximova  [6],  A.P.  Okladnikova  [7]
investigate  the  petroglyphs  and  rock  drawings  of  the  gorge  of  the  Tamgaly,
Saymaly-Tash,  Chulaksky  mountains  and  indicate  the  existence  of  dancing
choreography. The majority of these drawings belong to the VI-V centuries BC..
In  this  subsection,  the  object  of  our  research  is  the  fragments  of  the  rock
carvings with scenes reminding dancing plasticity of the ancient man. Along with A.
Medoyev's [8],  Z. Samashev's [9], K.M. Baypakov’s, A.N. Mariashev’s [10],  M.K.
Kadyrbayev's,  A.N.  Mariashev’s  [11]  interpretations  we  will  try  to  present  our
vision of separate graphic artifacts which will allow us to consider a role of religious
and world outlook, folklore traditions in formation of national dancing culture and
research of its semantics.
Petroglyphic engravings as art culture of ancient inhabitants, is presented in a
very impressive scope. They inform us of spontaneous dialectics of life of nomads in
its diversity and multidimensionality. The through motive of this art creativity is the
ritual  dancing  plots  representing  the  dancing  figures.  Similar  compositions  are
encountered  in  the  valleys  of  the  Terekty  river  in  the  mountains  of  Hantau  in
Southwest  Pribalkhashye;  in  an  engraving  from  Tushchibek  necropolis  in  the
Southwest slope of Western Karatau ridge, Mangyshlak, Saymaly-Tash, Chulaksky
mountains, gorges of Tamgaly, and so on.
One of the spotlight rock carving museums is the gorge of Tamgaly, the most
ancient amphitheater, a grandiose sanctuary. The special place among rock carvings
is taken by figures of the sun-heads. Often-met images of sun-headed deity figures
imprinted  in  various poses cause  huge interest. The  motive of  the  sun  is  the  most
widespread  among  rock  carvings.  The  consciousness  of  the  ancient  person  is  the
explanation for this: his idea of a tripartite structure of the world - Upper, Middle,
and Lower. Worshipping the forces of nature, to the Sky cults – Tengri, the Sun – as
a source of heat and light was dominant. The human's idea of a three-leveled world
made the Sun a totem. The sun was equated to a deity. People wished to keep warm
relations with the sun in order to keep mystical communication with it. Through the
plastic dancing movements which imitated the sun, the person showed recognition
of  a  celebration  of  a  heavenly  body  over  himself  and  his  tribespeople.  They
established mystical connection. Communicating with the sun, balancing on the fine
line between the sacral and secular worlds, people brought deeply sacral meaning to
the dedication service with dancing moves. Wellbeing of society of people depended
on  the  accuracy of  solar dancing plasticity performance  by the  person. His  plastic
body  portrayed  bright  and  unexpected  symbolical  figures  –  images  which  were
perceived  as the  sublime anthem to  the  Sun, the  sermon  turned  to  tribespeople  on
behalf of the sun. The rising sun in the morning was perceived as a victory over evil

70
ghosts in the human minds. While talking about the ancient national representations
of  the  sun-headed  people  depicted  in  petroglyphs,  we  will  give  the  example  of  a
Saka soldier outfit restored by the archeologist, scientist K. A. Akishev. Fragments
of  the  leader-warrior  outfit  represent the  idea  of  the  sparkling  sun.  This  fact  us  is
understood as the soldier's identification – the leader with image of a sun-like human
being.
Thus, the sun cult in the  Saka tribes  bore the "symbols of good and light" in
their  figurative perception and speaks of  the enormous  value in their spiritual life,
culture, as well as about the depth of art thinking of masters.
Having  the  mystical  origins  and  positive  complex  magic,  the  solar  sign  was
present in all spheres of art. Objects of art with the solar signs in the ancient time
reckoned  as  a  mascot,  a  charm.  Having  the  form  of  the  circle,  its  interpretation
received reflection and in round dances in  various people, and also was a basis of
emergence of some Kazakh dance moves. We will consider the representation of a
solar  sign  on  the  example  of  the  image  of  a  sun-headed  deity  figure  found  in  the
gorge of Tamgaly and which is of a special interest to us (Figure 1).
Figure 1. Tamgaly
«Sun-Headed deity»
                   Figure 2. Position «Bes Sausak»
In the drawing we see a figure standing with widely opened feet, with hands in
different provisions. The right hand is on a belt, and the left hand bent in an elbow at
right  angle and raised  on the  left  side of  the  body before the  face. The  palm with
accurately  spread  five  fingers  is  turned  away.  This  image  reminds  a  number  of
specific hand positions of the Kazakh dance. Thus, for example, the right hand on a
belt is similar to  the fourth position of hands of the man's  Kazakh dance  "belbeu"
(belt).  Other  allowed  option  -  position  of  hands  "tomengi  ornek"  (the  lower
ornament). The peculiar attention is drawn to the open fingers of the left hand which
reminds  specific position of  a  hand of  the  man's  Kazakh dance  "bes  sausak"  (five
fingers, a hand) (Figure 2). This position comes from the cosmogonic category and

71
has a wide semantic explanation. It was introduced in lexicon of the Kazakh dance
by Olga Vsevolodskoy-Golushkevich. In her book "School of the Kazakh Dance" -
this position is offered a following explanation: "bes sausak based on an ancient sign
of creation. It is just as ancient and also born in a sun cult– the cult of the good. The
open  hand represents sun beams"  [12,  p. 11]. The  "Bes  sausak" positioning  in  the
Kazakh dance is often supplemented with the rotations of the head and its traditional
turns which are also born as a plastic embodiment of the round movement of the sun
– a symbol of the movement, life, a poetry symbol:
The living,
You are to prove the kindness of the offended.
You are still to remember
Sense of ancient gesture -
Five. [13, p. 174].
We  will consider elements of  a solar sign in  the image of  ritual  dance in  the
petroglyph of Zhylysay (Figure 3).
Figure 3. Zhylysay
«Ritual dance».
Figure 4. Position «Kos orkesh»
We distinctly see the figure of the person with widely set feet, both hands in the
rounded form is clearly visible, with finger-tips touching shoulders. This carving is
very similar to the specific provision of the Kazakh dance "kos orkesh" (two camel
humps)  (Figure  4),  but  it  has  special  similarity  with  position  of  hands  "dongelek"
(circle) in mass dance. In dance, standing in such a stance, the dancers, next to each

72
other, connect hands at shoulders. Such interlacing of hands creates some kind of "a
solar  circle".  This  position  of  hands  plastically  reproduces  cosmogonic  motive,
symbolizes the sun as a life symbol.
Figure 5. “Dongelek” position in a mass dance
Thereby,  the  similarity  of  figure  positions  stamped  on  rock  drawings  with
specific provisions of the Kazakh dance grants us the right to assume that emergence
of  the  provisions  such  as  "bes  sausak",  "dongelek"  belong  to  the  primitive-
communal ages, and also represent the Sun symbol embodiment (Figure 5).
The  images  from  Arpauzen  representing  a  group  of  the  people  performing
military ritual dance that was called the "Battle of Tribes" are of special interest to
our research (Figure 6).
Figure 6. The Battle of tribes

73
Figure 7. Sakhnayik Syilyk
In  this  drawing  we  observe  groups  of  anthropomorphous  beings.  Most  likely
these  are  two  camps  of  the  tribes  which  are  at  war,  but  their  poses    are  rather
dancing.  The  archeologist  Z.  Samashev  believes  that  two  groups  of  masked
characters form a scene of the "military dance" "staged" by the central figure of the
priest  with  a  staff  in  a  hand  [1,  p.  169].  One  group  is  armed  with  bows,  clubs,
hammers,  and  the  second  group  is  represented  in  various  poses  reminding  some
specific provisions of hands in the Kazakh dance. In the background of the drawing
there is the image of two figures with the right hand raised upward, and the hand is
formed in a fist. Such image it is similar to specific position of hands in the Kazakh
man's dance "zhydyrak" (fist). We treat semantics of this gesture as demonstration
of force, power, display of the superiority over the others. One figure represents the
jump  moment  where  feet  in  widely  opened  stand  are  horizontal  to  the  earth. This
drawing reminds a jump "argymak" (Argamak), characterizing prompt attack in the
foreground. One figure in the group of the people depicted on the right side has both
hands slightly bent in elbows with palms directed upwards with the opened palms.
This  image  has  identical  similarity  with  specific  position  of  hands  in  the  Kazakh
dance  "sakhnalyk  syilyk"  (big  gift-scenic  look)  (Figure  7).  To  the  right  there  is  a
figure  of  the  person  in  the  profile  image  with  hands  lifted  up  before  face  of  the
person,  having  similarity  with  the  specific  position  "ulken  syilyk"  (grand  gift)
(Figure 9). We will try to explain this image as the appeal to the Supreme deity of
"Tengri",  "aruakh",  as  the  pleading  of  blessing  before  the  forthcoming  fight.
Drawings  of  people  in  the  "ulken  syilyk"  position  are  preserved  in  Kulzhabasy's
petroglyphs (Figure 8).

74
Figure 8. Kulzhabasy
Figure 9. Position «Ulken Syilyk»
In the figure on the left side we can distinctly trace the hands which are raised
upward, and the body and the head are slightly thrown back. This image suggests an
idea as if the person addresses to the Supreme lord "Tengri" expressing the respect
and  presenting  gifts.  Graphic  artifacts  give  us  the  chance  to  assume  that  spiritual
completeness  of  the  world  where  ancient  nomads  lived,  the  feeling  of  sources  of
creation to  be in  the Sky – was the  cornerstone of  their  outlook, and petroglyphic
engravings  transfer  semantic  unity  of  the  real  and  invented.  This  very  much
characterizes for outlook of inhabitants of the Great Steppe. Studying art of ancient
artists  we  notice  how  the  person  sought  to  reach  the  highest  figurativeness.  The
engraved  figures  of  people,  animals,  whose  looks  go  afar  and  up,  aspiring  to  the
Sky-Tengri, is understood as display of tribe's spiritual patrons ascension to gods, to
the eternity.
One  more  image  found  in  the  gorge  of  the  Tamgaly  reflects  about  ritual
dances (Figure 10).
Figure 10. Tamgaly «Ritual dance»

75
The  considered  petroglyph  represents  ritual  military dance.  It  is  expressed  in
group  circular  movements  with  all  participants  have  their  hands  weaved  in  the
composition. Identical  position of the dancers' feet translates that at the same time
they  performed  certain  movements  in  the  strong  excited  fractional  rhythm  whilst
submitting  to  the  single  rhythm,  captured  by  a  uniform  burst.  Dancers'  plasticity,
their  dynamics  and  staginess  cause  bright  pictures  and  images,  esthetic  ideals  of
courage and bravery in imagination. Each man was a warrior, the dignity of the man
was defined by force and courage. "Military dances were expression of a single will
and  single  purpose  –  victories  over  the  enemy.  They  had  enormous  educational
value. Organizing collective will and force, the dance inspired for heroic deeds and
anchored public acts, reflected moral and esthetic ideals of courage" [14, p.21]. The
percussion instrument  is  observed in the  drawing. It is  possibly the  prototype of  a
modern  daulpaz.  The  special  role  in  military  dances  belonged  to  daulpaz:  its
frightening  sounds  were  a  signal,  a  war-call,  an  appeal  to  work,  to  win:  "The
powerful  rumble  of  hundreds  of  daulpaz  was  a  war-call,  the  furious  roar,  the
fearlessness  and  ferocity,  a  signal  to  everyone–  to  listen,  lift,  act,  move  to  the
purpose, to conquest of the world" [15, p. 55]. Sounds of a daulpaz were the tool of
power dictatorship, the tool of suppression of will: "Daulpazs rattled. Their morning
rumble was not only a signal to rise, but also comprised something bigger. Thus, the
fearless  commander  urged  on  everyone  on  the  march  to  the  great  campaign
alongside  with  him,  –  that  was  a  reminder  of  the  seeking  and  unshakable  master
rushing  a  roar  of  daulpazs  -  straight  in  and through  the  sealed  doors,  piercing the
consciousness of a person asleep, thereby anticipating any other thoughts other than
those, imposed by his will" [15, p. 55].
Being  a  magical  action,  the  military  dance  was  aimed  at  raising  the  spirit  of
soldiers. Carrying out a ceremony of a god coaxing and glorifying, people thereby
urged Tengri to support soldiers in the forthcoming fight.

76
Emotional and expressional plasticity of movements of the anthropomorphous
characters found in the mountains of Bayan Zhurek (Figure 11), 25 kilometers away
from  Kapal  village  in  Almaty  region.  A  choice  of  a  place  created  conditions  for
ritual  ceremonies  departure  and  sacrifice  "round  sacral  and  significant object  with
participation of a large number of people" [1, p. 171].
Figure 12. Position «Burkit kanat»
  Figure 13. Position «Komdanu»
The motor and motive lexicon of people performing a ritual ceremony reminds
us of a number of poses and gestures in modern Kazakh dance: burkit kanat (wings
of a golden eagle) (Figure 12), komdanu (wing beats) (Figure 13), syilyk (offering),
sharsha (square).  The archeologist A.P. Okladnikov builds his theory regarding the
shaman dancing character upon the rock carvings. The author's treatment of hands in
live  motion  is  quite  peculiar:  hands  are  bent  in  the  elbows  in  zigzag  fashion  and
spread to the sides along the horizon; or one hand is lowered down; another is bent
in a and extended horizontally - there emerges an image of the dancing people  [16,
p. 80].
Figure 14. Sary-Arka «Prayer»
Figure 15. Position «Sharshy»

77
The  image  in  Sary-Arka  petroglyphs  was  named  the  "Prayer"  by
A.Kh.Margulan.  The  drawing  vividly  demonstrates  the  hands  in  the  position  of  a
geometrical form similar to the "sharsha" (square) posture in the Kazakh dance. The
hands  representing  a  square  perhaps  belong  a  Hun  era.  After  all  "geometrical
motives from simple to complex configurations – squares, rectangles, polygons, step
rhombuses, star-shaped figures, crosses of the complicated form are very symbolic
to the Hun tribes" [17, p. 209].
As we see, the dancing subject is peculiar to many monuments of petroglyphic
art: dynamic gestures of the dancing figures with hands upraised to the sky and to
the sun, plasticity and mobility of reversible positions of feet or widely placed feet
of the dancers joining hands, expressive plasticity, virtuosity and mobility of poses,
testify to myth and ritual, religious fundamentals of traditional ritual choreography,
to rich lexicon (semantics) of dancing movements in ancient dancers, figurativeness
of  art  expression.  According  to  M.  Freslim  the  problem  "intercultural
communication"  in  his  monograph  ‘looks  at  how  a  new  theory  of  the  cultural
networks  can  be applied in  studying some of  the  values in  the  cinema. This  is  an
opportunity  to  get  to  know  our  world  and  offers  new  ways  of  intercultural
communication’ [18; 19, р.8; 20, pp.75, 87].
So,  basing  on  the  actual  material  of  traditional  culture  and  archeological  and
ethnographical information, we tried:
-
to designate model of the most ancient ritual dances;
-
to establish connection of dances with religious beliefs, representations;
-
to  define cosmogonic  functions of ritual  dances in  the  light  of trichotomic
perception  of  the  world,  influence  of  ideas  of  "three  worlds"  on  plots,
images, lexicon, composite structure of ritual dances;
-
to analyze poses, gestures of dancers in aspect of dancing figurativeness;
-
to discover semantics of the main moves in ritual dances;
-
to define a place and a role of ritual military dances in valuable, behavioral,
communicative systems;
Art  galleries  in  the  open-air,  creations  of  ancient  artists  are  comparable  with
poetic myths and are a peculiar manifestation of attitude of the ancient inhabitants.
Reproducing  reality  in  design  of  various  plastic  patterns,  they  represent  the  first
steps  in  development  of  surrounding  reality  at  the  earliest  stages  of  social
development. This historical document gives us the chance to believe that sources of
origin  of  moves  in  the  Kazakh  dance  originate  from  elements  of  archaic  dancing
plasticity.
