Exercise 27. Here are some colourful and unusual compari-
sons. Use them in the sentences of your own:
as black as two o’clock in the morning,
as ugly as home-made soap,
as poor as a church mouse,
as nervous as a brick wall,
as cold as an ex-wife’s heart,
as welcome as a wet shoe,
as exciting as watching paint dry,
as dry as a bone,
as easy as taking candy from a baby,
as hungry as a horse.
Exercise 28. Translate the following sentences into Rus-
sian. Remember that 
as ...
 
as
 idioms make an adjective more in-
tense (stronger):
1. Oh, I am as blind as a bat without my glasses! [i.e. can’t see 
anything]
2. She has been as busy as a bee all morning. [i.e. very busy]
3. When he set off round the world, he felt as free as a bird. 
[i.e. very free]

4. If I were you, I would never trust her. She is as cunning as a 
fox. [i.e. very cunning]
5. There were tents as far as the eye could see at the rock

6. It’s as plain as the nose on your face that she is in love with 
him. [i.e. very easy to see]
7. Looks do not mean anything. It does not matter if you marry 
someone who is as ugly as a sin as long as you love each other. [i.e. 
very ugly indeed]
Exercise 29. Combine the following couples of some tradi-
tional expressions with 
as ... as:
Example: as cold as ice.
