Conceptual metaphor vs conceptual integration: convergent effects and prospects

The  article  discusses  conceptual  metaphor  theory  (CMT)  and  blending  theory  (BT),  which 

have  become  classics  of  cognitive  linguistics.  The  description  of  the  main  types  of  conceptual 

metaphors is given and the cognitive mechanisms of their formation are explained. It is noted that 

the studies of the Hungarian cognitter Z. Kövecses organically complement and develop CMT. He 

views  cultural  and  social  differences  through  the  lens  of  metaphorical  thinking.  Based  on  a 

comparative analysis, the discrepancies and relationships between CMT and BT are explored. It is 

proposed to consider these approaches as convergent and complementary.
