Grammar: Gerund or infinitive
The gerund is a special form of the verb that looks like a verb with the ending -ing, but has the qualities of a noun (so it can answer the question "What?"). Gerund examples:
The infinitive is an indefinite form of a verb that answers the questions “What to do? What to do?"The infinitive can be with the particle to (to-infinitive) and without the particle to (bare infinitive), it is also called the “bare infinitive”:to read – read
In our native language there is no part of speech similar to the gerund, so we use the infinitive (What to do?). But in a statement in English, you need to know in which cases the gerund is used, and in which the infinitive.
We can define it in terms of:
1. Form functions in a sentence
2. Construction or verb that precedes the form
3. Value
