Evolution of the Grammatical System
Since the OE period the grammatical type of the language has changed. In OE it was defined as a synthetic or inflected language (it means that the relations between words and grammatical meanings were expressed with the help of simple, grammatical forms; in building them OE employed grammatical endings, sound interchanges in the root, prefixes and suppletive formation. In the course of ME and Early NE period English has been transformed into a language of the analytical type with analytical forms and ways of word formation.
