Abstract Background: The electrical energy storage application in electric power systems opens new opportunities for improving the quality of power
system operation control and improves the economic performance of power system operation.
Materials and Methods: For many years, pumped storage power plants have been used principally in power systems. But their construction is
limited to the presence of water pools, spaced by a height of tens of meters, or by significant investments in the artificial creation of basins.
Recently, for the accumulation of energy, new types of storage devices have become increasingly used: electrochemical storage batteries,
flywheel energy storage, compressed air storage, superconductors, supercapacitors.
Results: The report provides a brief overview of the main types of storage devices that are at different stages of development and
implementation. The main characteristics of storage devices are presented, which are used when comparing different technologies of energy
storage in terms of their applicability in the electric power systems. The possible areas of application of storage devices for the regulation of
steady-state and transient operation of electric power systems and, in particular, in the UES of Russia are determined.
Conclusion: Energy storage technologies are developing significantly, energy storage devices are increasingly used in the practice of regulating
of electric power systems operation control, increasing the reliability of electricity supply to consumers.
Keywords: electrochemical storage batteries, flywheel energy storage, compressed air storage, superconductors, supercapacitors, operation
control, emergency control.
