Lesson Plan
The Place We Live In

  1. Greeting. Lesson plan and aims.

Good morning boys and girls! Glad to see you. How are you?
So am I, and I suppose we can get down to work. The topic of our lesson is “The place we live in”. You have already learnt quite a lot about different places people can live in and today I’d like us to revise the material. You are going to describe and furnish some rooms, make up dialogues and listen to an interesting story.
2. Warmer
a) Phonetic exercise.
First let’s do a phonetic drill and read the words in transcription.

  • Look at the board, try and pronounce these words correctly. (easy \famous\ quiet\ lovely\ expensive\ difficult\important\wonderful )

  • Make up your own sentences using these words.

b) I want to see if you know our active vocabulary well. Listen to me and guess what it is:
- a place we live in; a house
- a place where we cook food; a kitchen
- a place where we take a shower; a bathroom
- a room in a house where you can read or work quietly; a study
- a room where we can have dinner; a dining room
- a place where we take off our coats; a hall
3. Controlled practice.
a) Making up dialogues.
I can see you know the words denoting the names of different rooms in a flat or in a house well. And there are a lot of words which can help us to describe these places. Let’s remember them. Open your books on page 135 read and translate the words in the box of ex.2, translate them. You know that some families live in flats and some people prefer living in their own houses, but those may be very expensive. Some flats are large and some are small. Sometimes there are parks and gardens or playgrounds near people’s houses. Have a talk with your partner about flats or houses, the cards I’m going to hand out will help you.
Card 1.

  • Where do you… ?

  • Near …

  • Do you live in a … or in a … ?

  • I live in a …. because houses are terribly expensive.

  • What’s your … like?

  • It’s small but … and it’s …….. .

Card 2.

  • Oh, …! I hear you’ve got …! How do you …?

  • I like it… . It’s …

  • How many rooms ………….. in your …?

  • There are … . We’ve got a ………………. Come and ….. .

  • When’s the best time ……?

  • We are usually at home ……

Card 3.

  • Do you live near …..?

  • Yes, I … . I live in …..

  • Is your …. comfortable?

  • Rather. It’s …. but nice with a ………….

  • Do you like your …..?

  • Oh, it’s great and it’s ………. . I like it ….

Card 4.

  • I have wonderful news! We live in a new …

  • What is there in front of your …...?

  • In front of our … you can see … and there is …. next to …….

  • What rooms are there in ……?

  • We have a ………………….... .

  • Is your furniture old or …..?

  • It’s ……

  • I’m happy to hear that.

  • Come and …..

You’ve done a really good job. You’ve said a lot about the places where people live and we see that there are different rooms in our flats and houses.
b) Describing a picture..
Now, look at the board, please. You can see a picture of a room and some furniture.
What room do you think is shown in the picture? (a living room). Try to furnish and describe this room. Go to the board and try to do it.
That’s nice (wonderful, great)
с) Developing writing skills..
I feel you are ready to speak on the topic, but I’d like to make sure your speech will be grammatically correct. I’ll hand out the cards, please make up the sentences yourselves.
