and sh o u ld n ’t (have). Sometimes you have to use the present, som etim es the past. Rem em ber! We often use sh ould to say that something is not ‘right’ or not what we expect: - The price on the packet is wrong. It says 65 pence hut it should be 50. For the p a s t, we use sh ould have (done) to say that someone did the wrong thing. - Why were you at home yesterday? You should have been at work. Example: The speed limit is 30 miles an hour but tom is driving at 50. He shouldn 't be driving so fast. 1. It’s very cold. Mr. Taylor, who has been ill recently, is walking along the road without a coat. H e ___. 2. We went for a walk. While we were walking, we got hungry but we hadn’t brought anything with us to eat. We said: W e ___ .3 .1 went to Paris. Marcel lives in Paris but I didn’t go to see him while I was there. When I saw him later he said: Y o u ___ . 4. The notice says that the shop is open every day from 8.30. It is now 9 o ’clock but the shop isn’t o p e n .___ . 5. The driver in front stopped suddenly without warning and I drove into the back o f his car. It w asn’t my fa u lt.___. 6. The children normally go to bed at 9 o ’clock. It is now 9.30. They are not in bed; they are watching television.___. ___ . (Two sentences). 7. The accident happened because Tom was driving on the wrong side o f the ro a d .___ . 15. EXERCISES ON INDIRECT SPEECH Exercise 1. R ew rite each sentence, beginning as shown. D on’t change the m eaning. We use indirect questions when we want to ask questions politely. Remember: Introductory phrase or question + clause with norm al word order. We d o n ’t use question word order in the second p art o f the sentence. E.g. I would like to know when the next train to London leaves. Some indirect questions, which begin with a question word, need a question mark at the end o f the sentence. e. g. Could you tell me where the library is? 1. What time does the next boat leave? - Do you think you could tell m e ___ ? 2. Where can I change some money? - Can you tell m e ____ ? 3. How much does this pullover cost? - Could you tell m e ___? 4. How do I get to Victoria Station? - Could you explain___ ? 5. Does this train go to Gatwick Airport? - Could you tell m e ___ ? 6. Where do you come from? - Would you mind telling m e ___ ? 7. What do you think o f London? - Do you think you could tell m e ___ ? Exercise 2. R ew rite the sentences correctly. 1 .1 wonder if you could tell me what time does the plane from Frankfurt arrive. 2. Could you let me know when would you like me to come for an interview? 3 . 1 wonder if you know what bus should I catch for the town center. 4. Do you think you could tell me how do you work this ticket machine. 5 . 1 wonder you have seen George. 6 . 1 would like to know do you have any double rooms. 7.
