7. EXERCISES ON THE FUTURE SIMPLE TENSE
Exercise 1. Use the verbs in brackets in the Future Simple tense:
1. I (to go) to the library tomorrow. 2. He (to take) his examination in English in May. 3. 
This postgraduate (to defend) his thesis next week. 4. The scientists (to discuss) this problem next 
week. 5. I (to do) investigations in the field o f political sciences. 6. Professor X. (to deliver) 
lectures next month. 7. She (to read) specialty literature in the library tomorrow. 8. The probationer 
(to write) his summary in English in March. 9. My supervisor (to analyze) my work with the 
members o f the laboratory. 10. She (to carry) on investigations in the field o f mathematics.
Exercise 2. Study some modal meanings of ‘will’ and ‘shall’ in the following sentences and
translate them into Russian.
a) ‘Shall’ is used to ask someone’s opinion, to make an offer or a suggestion.
1. Shall 1 take a message? 2. Shall we consult recognized scientists? 3. Shall we discuss the 
issue right now? 4. Shall I hand in my paper in a month? 5. Shall we plan our campaign now? 6. 
Shall I answer your question? 7. Shall I help you with your translation? 8. Shall I arrange the 
meeting for tomorrow? 9. Shall I call you back? 10. Shall we fix the date o f our experiment right 
now?
b) ‘Will’ is used to ask if somebody wants something or is willing to do something (polite
offers, requests, etc.).
1. Will you join us in discussion o f the problem? 2. Will you phone me when you complete 
the experiment? 3. Will you have another cup o f tea? 4. Will you go to the exhibition with us? 5. 
Will you help me with translation o f the article into English?
c) ‘Will’ is used to say that somebody (something) is (isn’t) willing or ready to do something.
l.W e can’t find anyone who will take the job. 2. I will leave immediately. 3. I asked him 
about it many times but he w on’t tell me. 4. The door w on’t open. 5. My car won’t start. Something 
is wrong with it. 6. I will not get drawn into another financial debate with you. I really won’t. 7. 
Jack w on’t start the experiment right now. Not all the arrangements have been prepared for it as yet.
8. We won’t deal with the problem because its study hasn’t been approved as yet.
