Exercise 3. Use the introductory verbs given in the box to turn the following sentences into
reported speech.
NOTE:
Many verbs are more descriptive than
say
and
tell
for example,
explain, interrupt,
demand, insist, admit, complain, warn.
Sometimes we report the idea, than the actual words.

cheated in the Maths test,” Mr. Nickols said to Mick. 5. “You must clean your room tomorrow,”
Mum said to me. 6. “I’m the fastest runner o f all,” Carl said. 7. “Tell me why you didn’t do your
homework,” Mrs. Reese said to Cindy. 8. “I saw a tall man with blond hair break into the shop,”
Mr. Parker said. 9. “You m ustn’t drive my car without asking me first,” Dad said to me. 10. “Yes, I
used your mobile phone,” Max said to Donna.
Exercise 4. Put the following into indirect speech.
1. “I have something to show you,” I said to her. 2. “Nothing grows in my garden. It never
gets any sun,” she said. 3. “I'm going away tomorrow, mother,” he said. 4. “I have been in London
for a month so far I haven’t had time to visit The Tower,” said Rupert. 5. “It isn’t so foggy today as
it was yesterday,” I remarked. 6. “We have moved into our new flat. We don’t like it nearly as
much as our last one,” said my aunt. 7. “From one o f the windows o f my flat I can see the Eiffel
Tower,” he said. 8. “You haven’t given me enough money,” he pointed out. 9. “I’m going fishing
with father this afternoon,” said the small boy, “and we are going into the garden now to dig for
worms.” 10. “My new house is supposed to be haunted, but so far I haven’t seen any ghosts,” she
said.
