5. Hollywood
In the hills above Los Angeles, you can see the word that millions of people all around the world know: tall, white letters spelling "HOLLYWOOD." It is a famous symbol of the world's movie capital. However, Hollywood wasn't always so well known. In 1853, only a single mud hut stood there. Two decades later, the area just west of Los Angeles was a farming community.Itwasn't until the early 1900s that the film industry arrived and changed Hollywood forever.
In 1910, director D.J. Griffith arrived in Los Angeles to film the short movie Jn Old California. He loved filming there and quickly told the others of this great location. Cecil B. De Mille, one of the all-time greatest directors, filmed The Squaw Man in Hollywood in 1914, It was the west coast's first full-length movie, a huge success, and the reason why the film industry never left California again,
Nowadays a great number of movie studios are situated here as well as many movie stars have their houses in Hollywood. The Academy Awards are annually held in Hollywood in late February or early March.
The main sightseeing of Hollywood is Hollywood Walk of Fame. It consists of more than 2400 five-pointed stars on the sidewalks along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard. The stars are permanent public monuments for achievements in the entertainment industry. The stars have the names of actors, musicians, directors, producers, musical groups and even fictional characters.
Hollywood is a very popular tourist destination.

7. I love my job!
James Shannon is a chef in a London restaurant. He talks about his job.
I work at Suzie’s, which is one of the most popular restaurants in central London. The best part of working there is being part of a fantastic team of friendly and talented people.
I left school and started by washing dishes when I was only 16. I wasn’t interested in food and I never cooked at home, but I worked hard, and soon became a waiter. Simon, who was head chef at the time, then began to show me how to cook and I loved it so much I went to college to learn more.
When Simon left Suzie’s, I became head chef. At the time all the food was British. The quality was excellent, but I wanted to do something different, so I decided to have an international menu. Now we serve food from all around the world. There are so many fantastic markets and food shops in London that I can usually find any ingredient I need.
I use a lot of natural ingredients such as brown rice, organic flour, and pasta. Some people think that healthy food is boring, but they’re wrong. Well-prepared natural food has so much more flavour than fast food. Our food is healthy and our customers love it. We use the very best meat and the highest quality vegetables.
Suzie’s is open Monday to Friday from 5.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m., and from 12.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. at weekends. On Fridays and Saturdays we play live music from around the world. There’s a children’s menu on Sundays and that’s when we serve traditional British food.

8. Hi Maria
Do you remember me? My name’s Ben Sanders, I’m twenty-nine, and I’m British. I live in a small flat in north London and I work as a secretary for a big computer company in central London. I travel to work on the underground, but I often work at home. I don’t smoke, but I drink a lot of coffee!
What else can I tell you about myself? My family live in Brighton, on the south coast of England. I have one brother and one sister. My brother works as a waiter and my sister’s a nurse. Their names are Harry and Liz. My parents are both teachers.
I love sport. I play football and basketball a few times a month and I watch all the best matches on TV. My favourite food is Mexican. I’m very lucky because my brother works in a Mexican restaurant, so I eat there when I visit my family. I study French and Italian in my free time because one day I want to live in France or Italy.
Please write and tell me about yourself.
Ben

9. A film
A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still images on a strip of plastic which, when run through a projector and shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI (Computer-generated imagery) and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The process of filmmaking is both an art and an industry.
Films usually include an optical soundtrack, which is a graphic recording of the spoken words, music and other sounds that are to accompany the images. It runs along a portion of the film exclusively reserved for it and is not projected.
Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures. They reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment, and a powerful medium for educating—or indoctrinating—citizens. The visual basis of film gives it a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles to translate the dialog into the language of the viewer.

11. TRAVEL essentials
I’m a travel writer. I usually travel alone, but my family sometimes comes with me. It’s diffi cult because they always have a lot of bags – look at this photo of our trip to Ecuador! There are eight people and there are about fi fteen bags! In my sister’s bags there are three jackets, four or fi ve jumpers, seven pairs of trousers and two dresses. There are six or seven books too. She never travels without books. In my husband’s bag there’s a pair of boots, a pair of shoes and a pair of sandals! And his maps – he loves maps and he always takes maps on trips. But when I travel alone, I take a very small suitcase. There’s a pocket for my travel documents and inside there are two parts – one for clothes and one for my laptop. I never travel without my laptop! That’s it!
