INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRANSLATION AND CULTURE
ACCORDING TO SUSAN BASSNETT
This paper accounts for some basic principles supporting the cultural turn in translation studies.
It is argued that the motto: translate cultures not language, misrepresents the nature of translating
since it is based on false conceptualisation of relationships between the two human elements. It also
dramatically minimises the study of the translating process, putting forward instead the figure of
literary translator as a major agent in the field of cultural power relationships and conferring him the
status of rewriter.
Keywords: translating culture, cultural translation, linguistic vs. cultural equivalence, rewriting,
rewriter, Soviet and Russian translation studies, British translation theory.
