Materials and methods. The plant sample, A.asiatica was collected from mountain
slopes of the Kaskasu village and air dried at room temperature. The dried material was
homogenized to obtain a coarse powder and stored in air-tight bottles. The sample preparation
includes successive extraction of plant material with non-polar and polar solvents. About 300
gm of the powdered plant raw material was subjected into successive extraction in different
extracts like chloroform, ethanol (96%) and these extracts employed in GC-MS analysis. The
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of extracts of A.asiatica were
performed using a GC-MS (Model; 6890N/5973N) equipped with a DB-WAXetr column of 30
m length, diameter 0.25 µm film thickness. The column over temperature was programmed
from 40
o
C to 260
o
C for 77 min. The mass range from 34-750 m/z was scanned. 1.0 µL of the
extracts of A.asiatica was injected to the GC-MS manually for analysis. Total running time of
GC-MS is 77 min. The spectrum of the unknown component was compared with the spectrum
of the known components stored in the NIST library.
Results and discussion. The results pertaining to GC-MS analysis led to the
identification of number of compounds from the extracts of A.asiatica. These compounds were

identified through mass spectrometry attached with GC. The sample of chloroform extract was
run for 40 minutes. The spectrum profile of GC-MS confirmed the presence of 18
phytochemical components (Table 1) from A.asiatica. The phytoconstituents identified were
mainly sterols, terpenoids and alkanes (Fig. 1).
