are under on department. This bachelor study program of European Studies focuses mainly on the problems
of life and institutions of the European Integrations and its aim is to prepare first - rate specialists with
working knowledge of system and functioning legislation of the European Union. Key knowledge in this
study program is learnt from this course: European structure and institutions, functioning of the institutions
within the European integration, theories of political systems, international law, European law, international
relations and diplomatic experience.
The Purpose of the next study program - Public Administration - is to prepare its students for the
practice in a way to be able to apply an appropriate level of knowledge in the field of public administration
(particularly economy, political science, sociology, law, and also the exact sciences) and language skills
in many social spheres (government, local government, public policy, regional development, local,
national and international organizations and institutions, politics, civil society organizations, media, etc.).
Core study fields - Functions and forms of the public administration in a modern democratic country;
Legislation regulating the operation of the public administration and the “government – citizen” relation;
politics, constitutional law of the Slovak republic, administrative law; Economic principles of the public
administration and public sector, and its information systems, financing of the public sector - public
administration and local government financing; Intra-organizational processes and their management;
Procedures for data processing and working with the information; social, moral and legal aspects of the
profession [1].
One of the youngest one study programs at the Faculty of Social Sciences – Social Services and
Counselling. The aim of the study program is to prepare its students for the practical life in a way to be able
to apply an appropriate knowledge level in various professional disciplines in the field of social services
and counselling in all types of entities founded by the national, regional or local governments, private
subjects and subjects of the non-profit sector. Future graduates will also receive adequate language skills
to successfully enter different social areas of practical life, e. g. improving the quality of social life of the
population, especially by acting in public administration bodies dealing with social governance [2].
The last new study program that was created only this year (2014) is situated under the Department
of Sustainable development. Graduated of this new study program learnt knowledge and skills that make
them enable to act in public policy and public administration, tackle and make decisions together in the
preparation of policy papers and regulations of public policies, to participate in the reform and modernization
of public administration, as well as control and assurance sustainable development, in keeping with respect
for economic, social and environmental aspects [3].
In the field of research and scientific activities, Faculty of Social Science promotes two scientific
journals. The first one called “Slovak Journal of Political Sciences” [4] is one of the oldest one in our
region. In the journal are published original papers written by political scientists in Slovakia abroad,
sociological essays from our social, economic, political and cultural life. It pays special attention to
the problems of political system, political parties, civic society, regional communities, the dilemmas of
unemployment youth, social structure and mobility. Papers about the history of Political science, about
theory and methodology, findings of sociological research and surveys of public opinion are also published.
The Journal is not only suitable for political scientist and sociologist, but also for the broader public, for
universities and middle – level school students, cultural and educational workers, activists of political
parties and for all those who want to know more about European societies. From 2014 it is published only
in English language (4 issues per annum).
The second journal called “Slovak Journal of Public Policy and Public Administration” is a peer-
reviewed scientific journal that aims is to deliver scientific studies, articles and reviews by authors from
Slovakia and Slovak ratios, but aspires to be room for controversy, exchange of views and information
on current trends in scientific research, public policy and public administration abroad. The publisher of
the magazine›s Faculty of Social Sciences, University of St. Cyril and Methodius in cooperation with the
Slovak public administration at the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Journal published quarterly in print and
electronic form, and complements the space in quality literature suitable for pedagogical purposes [5], [6].
In the scientific activities, faculty is involved in research projects in Slovakia and also in the international
level. Nowadays the faculty participate in projects of the European Commission – MyPlace and MyWeb.
