The article examines the role and place of signs in the ethnogenesis of the Kazakh people. Each nation, as in

culture of the people. We give a historical review of the ethnogenesis of the sign system of the Kazakh people, the
history of the development of tamgas and patrimonial signs. The simplest geometric figures (circle, square,
triangle, angle, etc.), sacred pictograms, birds and animals, household items, tools, weapons and horse harness,
sometimes letters of different types, were used as a prototype for a tamga, according to available ethnographic
data. alphabets. Perhaps the prototypes of many signs were totemic animals or other symbols that go back to tribal
relations. The article was written as part of the special-purpose funding program "History and Culture of the Great
