There are four in a year: summer, autumn, winter and spring. Every season
lasts about three months. Summer is the warmest season of the year. It begins in
June ends in August. It light early in the morning and it gets dark late in the
evening. In summer we have the longest days and the shortest nights. It is usually
very hot and people can wear very lights clothes. It often rains but the rain is warm
and doesn’t last long. You can see green trees, a lot of flowers and grass
everywhere.
Most people have their holidays in summer. The rich spend them in the
mountains or at the seaside. The poor spend them in the country. One can swim
and bathe, lie in the sun, play tennis and football or some other out-of-door games.
Then comes autumn. Some peoples say early autumn is the most beautiful
season when it is still warm and the tress are getting yellow and red. They look so
beautiful. English people call this period of time “Indian summer”. little by little
the days become shorter the nights become longer. It often rains and it’s getting
colder and colder. People have to wear warm clothes and raincoats and take
umbrellas with them. Sometimes it snows and it gets windy. There appear dark
clouds in the sky. It isn’t so cold as in winter yet, but winter is coming. One can
say it’s the worst time of the year.

Lobachevsky
Men of science consider Lobachevsky to be a great mathematician. The whole
world knows Lobachevsky to have demonstrated and explained the principles of
the theory of parallel lines. We consider him to be a great organizer of popular
education and we know him to have written much on the problems of education.
Lobachevsky was born on December 1, 1792 near Nizhny Novgorod. His father
died when he was a child, leaving the family in extreme poverty. The family
moved to Kazan where Lobachevsky was admitted to the gymnasium. His progress
was very rapid in mathematics and classics. At the age of 14 he entered the
University of Kazan where he spent 40 years as a student, then an assistant
professor, and finally rector. Under his direction great improvements were made at
the University. There was founded and equipped an observatory and was built a
mechanical workshop.
Lobachevsky proved that Euclid’s axiom on parallel lines was not true. He built a
new geometrical theory quite different from that of Euclid. His ideas greatly
influenced not only geometry, but mechanics, physics, astronomy as well. He was
one of those who laid the foundations of science.
Question: What did Lobachevsky demonstrate and explain to the whole
world?
