Methods and Methodology
The user study evaluates the usability of the proposed UI design using 3 hypotheses, aiming to cover all the 
aspects which could concern blind students while navigating in the DL intranet system. 
H1: Finding a course and its current home assignment requires less effort and time with the new user 
interface.
H2: Tracking the grades on the courses is easier and faster with the new design.
H3: Navigating to the academic calendar and checking the upcoming events is faster with the new interface.
The study target group consisted of sighted participants who had their eyes covered with a blindfold. Half

of the participants had prior experience with DL visual interface, while the other half did not. Since all the 
participants are new to screen readers, they were required to complete the mandatory 30-minute training on 
how to use NVDA and were also given 15 minutes to practice navigating through a sample website.
The user study was conducted by asking the users to solve the following tasks:
Task 1:
a) Navigate to the courses and find the Research Methodology course:
b) Find out the hometask for week 8;
c) Find the submit button.
Task 2: 
a) Navigate to the dashboard menu:
b) Find grades section;
c) Find out the midterm 1 grade for the Machine Learning course.
Task 3: Navigate to the Academic calendar and download it.
Comparison of two interfaces was performed using several metrics:
● 
time
: how long it took to complete a task
● 
hits
: number of keystrokes it took to complete the task
