Modern literary criticism, considering the works of A.P. Chekhov, from the point of view of
being and ontological analysis, attach great importance to his image of the garden. However, the
writer, in our opinion, contrasted the garden with the ravine, and not so much in the existential as
in the spiritual plane. The garden for Chekhov is a generalizing symbol of faith in culture, which is
swayed by a spiritual ravine. In such a contrast of two symbols, one can trace not only the picture
of the world of the 90s of the XIX century, but also understand the human aspirations in the sphere
of spiritual aspirations or undertakings.
