Continity of underground mosquesof Mangistau with sufian khanaki

Mangystau  is  one  of  the  most  unique  regions  of  the  country’s  cultural  landscape,  which  is 

rich  in  a  huge  number  of  monuments  and  holy  places  and  known  in  history  as  the  sacred  land  of 

myths and legends. A certain idea runs through all genres of  cultural  texts of  the region, which is 

inextricably connected with sacrality, one of the fundamental principles of a traditional society. It is 

known  that  the  sacrality  is  a  phenomenon  of  the spiritual  life,  which  can  manifest  itself  only  in  a 

society,  and  only  in  a  symbolic  form;  it  is  stored  in  the  collective  instinct  and  is  based  on  the

historical  self-identification  of  the  peoples,  their  self-esteem,  national  pride;  and  it  certainly 

influences their further development in the highest degree. 

The  underground  mosques  of  Mangistau  and  Ustyurt  are  a  unique  feature  of  spiritual  and 

historical value in the world. The article talks about  the similarities and peculiar features, history 

and modern use of underground mosques and medieval Sufi khanaki.
