Cytomegalovirus infection

latent infection of white blood cells caused 

by cytomegalovirus (CMV), a beta-group 

herpesvirus. Approx. 60% of persons over 

age  35  have  been  infected  with  CMV, 

usually during childhood or early adult-

hood;  the  incidence  appears  to  be  higher 

in persons with low socioeconomic status. 

Primary  infection  is  usually  mild  in  per-

sons  with  normal  immune  function,  but 

CMV can be reactivated and cause overt 

disease in pregnant women, persons with 

AIDS, or those receiving immunosuppres-

sive therapy following organ transplanta-

tion
