LISTENING COMPREHENSION VARIANT 94
The Bear and the Kettle Once a bear lived in the wood, and he was very hungry. He came into a village to see what he could find there.
He came to a small house. The door was open and there was nobody in it.
The bear went in, but he could not find any food in the house.
Suddenly he saw a kettle with hot water. The bear thought that there was something good in it. He smelt the kettle and burnt his nose.
Now the bear thought that the kettle was an animal with a sting. He wanted to punish the new animal, he took the kettle in his paws and tried to crush it. But he could not crush the kettle.
The more he tried to crush the kettle, the more he burnt himself. He roared with pain.
At that moment a man passed by the house and heard the noise. He looked through the window and saw the bear. Very quickly he ran for his gun and killed the bear.
In that country when a man wants to burn somebody and cannot do it, but hurts himself, people say, “He is like the bear with the kettle”.
