On the Train Bill was on his way home from London. When he arrived at Waterloo station the train was already standing at the platform. All the carriages were full, but Bill found a seat between two ladies in a non-smoking compartment.
When a train started a man ran down the platform, opened the carriage door and got into a first-class compartment. He was wearing a black hat a black suit. The train went fast and didn‘t stop until it was in the country. The two ladies were talking all the time. They talked so loudly that at last Bill got up and left the compartment. In the corridor he saw a man in black again. He was standing at the open window, his right hand was on the communication cord near the first class compartment.
Suddenly the man pulled the cord. The train stopped immediately. The man in black got off the train and walked fast to a large house.
―Who pulled the cord? the guard asked.
―It was that man. I believe he is a thief. Phone the police.
The guard looked out of the window.
―Thief did you say? he said.
―That‘s Sir Bertram Montegue. He sometimes pulls the communication cord as the train passes his house. He pays 25 pounds each time. He is very rich, you know.
