Be: am, is, are---- present
Was, were--------- past
Being – ing-------present participle
Been--------------- present
Do: do, does------ present
Did ---------------past
Have, has, have----present
Had------------- past

Modal auxiliaries on the other hand are:

Can/could Will/would
Shall/should ought to
Dare May/might
Must Used to Need
They explained that one factor of distinction between the primary auxiliary verbs and the modalauxiliary verbs is, while the former can be used as both main and auxiliary verbs, the latter can only function in a sentence as auxiliaries. In other words, the primary auxiliary verbs can function as the main verb elements in a sentence and can also function as an auxiliary in another.
For example:
James is a student. is here is a main verb
James is reading English. is here, is an auxiliary while reading is the main verb. The auxiliary verbs are the most intricate and complicated of all the kinds of verbs in English and they are also at the centre of contraction which seems confusing to non grammarians.

Transitive and intransitive verbs
Verbs that take a direct object alone are called transitive verbs, and those verbs that do not take either a direct object or an indirect object are called intransitive verbs. There is yet another category of verbs that take both the direct object and the indirect object, and they are called ditransitive verbs.
A transitive verb requires a direct object. The action of the verb is directed toward the direct object: the verb passes its action onto the object; the object receives the action of the verb. The direct object completes the meaning of the transitive verb; without the direct object the meaning and the action of the verb are not fully understandable.Generally, the direct object stands immediately after the verb. The minimal basic pattern of declarative sentences for transitive verbs is Subject (Noun or Pronoun) + Verb + Direct object. For example:
Anna bought a bag. Tom likes apples.
He washed the dishes. Sheknowsme.
The boy lost his key. Shesoldhercar.
An intransitive verb cannot take a direct object. An intransitive verb does not need a direct object to complete the meaning of the verb. The verb may be used without an object or may be followed by a prepositional object or by an adverbial modifier.
The minimal basic pattern of declarative sentences for intransitive verbs is Subject + Verb. Other common patterns are Subject + Verb + Prepositional object and Subject + Verb + Adverbial modifier. Forexample:
Anna works. They left. Tom is sleeping.
We talked about you. Iagreewithhim.
She lives in Rome. He runs very fast.
Generally, only transitive verbs are used in the passive voice. (There are some peculiarities – see "Transitivity and passive voice" below.) Forexample:
His father built a new house. – A new house was built by his father.
The abbreviations v.t. or vt (or T) are used to indicate transitive verbs in dictionaries; the abbreviations v.i. or vi (or I) indicate intransitive verbs.
Transitive and intransitive forms of verbs are used to denote how a verb acts when used with a direct object and an indirect object. Let us look at a few examples.

  • Vincent gave a box of chocolates to his brother. (Indirect object – his brother, Direct object – a box of chocolates)

  • Garry passed the water bottle to Kevin, who was sitting in the first row. (Indirectobject – Kevin, Directobject – thewaterbottle)

  • The little girl ran around the park for two hours.

  • Francey walked to school every day.

  • My mom cleaned the house today. (Directobject – thehouse)

  • Seena did not like the movie. (Directobject – themovie)

In the above examples, the verbs ‘gave’ and ‘passed’ in the first two sentences are seen to take a direct object and an indirect object, whereas the verbs ‘ran’ and ‘walked’ take no object at all. In the last two sentences, the verbs ‘cleaned’ and ‘did not like’ take a direct object and no indirect object.
Ditransitive verbs are used when someone or something that is not the subject receives something due to the action of the verb.
Forexample:

  • lent my brother some money; Or

  • lent some money to my brother
