The  study  of  the  functioning  of  the  traditional  Muslim  mektebe  and  madrassah  -  the  most  massive  and 

remaining until the beginning of the XX century. the only forms of the cultural-social society of the Kazakhs of 

the Steppe Krai accessible to the broad masses of the Kazakh population-it allows us to single out certain patterns 

and characteristic ethnic features in the people's  Islam of Kazakhs. Of particular importance is the study of the 

past and present spiritual culture of Muslim peoples in the post-Soviet space, where religious traditions have been 

interrupted for decades of domination by  militant atheism. These traditions require  their scientific research and 

development in the spiritual life of the people. 

Historiographical  analysis  shows  that  the  issues  of  the  formation  of  an  ethnically  special  Muslim  education 

system  in  the  late  19th  and  early  20th  centuries,  the  impact  of  the  Islamic  factor  on  sociopolitical  and  cultural 

processes received fragmentary coverage in the scientific literature. Part of the research is based on archival data, 

published and unpublished documents, materials of government expeditions. In some works there are results and 

analysis  of  ethnographic  surveys,  statistical  and  scientific  reference  material  in  pre-revolutionary  publications. 

However, there is no comprehensive study devoted to the problems of everyday Islam, the ethnic specifics of the 

Muslim education of the Kazakhs of the Steppe Krai in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
