about 636 kilometres long up to 82 kilometres wide. With a maximum
depth of 1,620 metres it is the deepest freshwater lake in the world. The
lake is a popular summer resort. Baikal’s water is exceptionally pure.
Many species of animals living here can be found nowhere else.
The water in the
lake remains cold year-round; it is frozen from
December to May. The Baikal is fed by numerous rivers but has only
one outlet, the Angara River, at Irkutsk.
