1. Decide whether the following statements are true or false according to the
text.
1. A work of art is the product of human intelligence.
2. The understanding of process – the how – often contributes quite a lot to
our appreciation of art.
3. Artists learn to make art by observing the achievements of their contempo-
raries.
4. An artist may create a specific work for any of a thousand reasons.
5. Great works of art hold one meaning.
6. The most important thing is that some works of art come to mean some-
thing for you, that your own experiences, thoughts, and emotions find a
place in them.
2. Discuss the following:
1. Talk about the process of understanding of works of art.
2. Do you agree with the following ideas about art:
“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see” (Miles David).

“Art is a microscope which the artist fixes on the secrets of his soul, and
shows to people these secrets which are common to all” (Leo Tolstoy).
“It is the function of art to renew our perception. What we are familiar with
we cease to see. The writer shakes up the familiar scene, and as if by magic,
