Exercise 1. Comment on the forms of the Infinitives. 1. To explain this simple task is not so easy. 2. To give a true picture o f the surrounding matter is the task o f natural sciences. 3. In order to understand the procedure, consider the following analogy. 4. The problem is too difficult to be settled so soon. 5. A new method is to be prepared to test the accuracy o f the experiment. 6. The information to be obtained during the experiment is our present concern. 7. Steps are to be taken to settle the problem. 8. The conference to be attended by us will be held in the main hall. 9. The scientists seem to have applied a new method o f investigation. 10. A new method is believed to have given good results. 11. The conference was supposed to have been held this week. 12. The scientists seem to have thought that one experiment would be enough. 13. We know him to have established a laboratory o f his own. 14. He seems to be paying no attention to what is going round him. 15. A lot o f interesting things seem to be happening in science now. 16. The scientist seems to have been interviewed for two hours. 17. Experts seem to have been asking questions for three hours. 18. They seem to have been considering the matter 30 since morning. 19. I was sorry to have occupied m yself with the problem for so long, and not to have given it up earlier. 20. They admit to have been informed o f this possibility before the experiment. Exercise 2. Complete the following, using the Infinitive as subject. Use the following prompts: to illustrate the results gained; to give up the previous method o f research; to invent a computer; to settle the problem; to publish all reports; to take part in: to carry out such an experiment; to argue about it; to avoid mistakes, to make a choice. 1.
