Introduction
MacKeeper is computer software for macOS. MacKeeper was developed by ZeoBIT,
later acquired by Kromtech, and is currently owned by Clario Tech. MacKeeper has a
troubled and litigious history. Zeobit settled a class action lawsuit accusing them of
deceptive advertising and making false claims about MacKeeper's capabilities, and
Kromtech unsuccessfully sued MacKeeper critics. Some versions are difficult to
uninstall, and some versions have been flagged as undesirable
by other anti-virus
programs. In 2015, the personal information of 13 million users was publicly accessible
on the web.
Is MacKeeper safe?
Yes, MacKeeper is safe. But, the rumor has it, MacKeeper isn’t the smartest choice for
increasing your Mac’s security. The reason behind that is it has used tricky ways in the
past to attract more users by offering a free download of the app and asking to pay for it
afterward. Also, the software used to be difficult to remove from your device.
However, MacKeeper is now owned by Clario Tech which is approved by AppEsteem –
a world-leading cybersecurity company. Therefore, MacKeeper claims to be more secure
now.
While testing MacKeeper myself, I could only see detections of potentially unwanted
applications and riskware. Also, older version applications were detected as scareware.
However, those are commonly detected by other antivirus programs as well. So my trust
in MacKeeper has increased at this point.
Nevertheless, it’s worth taking a better look at independent testing results to have a
better understanding. Well, we can see that MacKeeper has perfectly blocked Av-
Comparatives 538 samples. To be exact, it has successfully blocked 100% of the threats
provided.
And even though the PUA detection rate is a bit lower – 98%, it still proves to be a
trustworthy security tool. I mean, even Avira Antivirus, which is one of the best
antivirus
software, has scored 96%, so MacKeeper has beaten it up at this stage. But it

could be even better.
What I didn’t like is that MacKeeper lacks some important protection features, for
example, web protection or parental controls. So, it’s quite paradoxical since it offers
lots of other security and non-security tools for preventing malware and improving your
Mac’s behavior.
With MacKeeper, you
get a few security features, such as the ID theft guard that will
track your data breaches and an update tracker for keeping all your apps to date and
preventing security gaps in them. It's also worth mentioning the Smart uninstaller which
helps you to fully get rid of unwanted programs. And to save up some space on your
device, the duplicates finder will help you out.
MacKeeper security features
MacKeeper is ready to offer you a rich and useful security baggage. With it, you'll
hardly miss out on the system’s and personal data’s security gaps. In other words, you
get to scan your device
for malware any time you want, track data breaches over your
online accounts, and even hide your browsing history from your ISP (Internet Service
Provider).
Although it lacks some essential features that include
ransomware and web protection,
or parental controls, its currently implemented features will definitely improve your
Macs safety.
