Yeemeren and R. Grootendorst define argumentative competence as the ability to sequentially
arrange the arguments, relating them to specific goals and, guided by the norms associated with
these goals [17]. According to N.Y. Fanyan argumentative competence of an argumentative
personality functions in a concrete modeled argumentative space, which generates
corresponding methods and means of argumentation. He also singles out the concept of an
abstract argumentative space, which implies the presence of an infinite number of potential
substances that are needed as raw materials and supplied to concrete argumentative spaces [5].
In their scientific works N.I. Makhnovskaya and S.N. Musulbes put forward the paradigms of
"argumentative ability" and "argumentative skill" [18], [19]. Datsyuk V.V. in her research
formulates English-language argumentative competence and defines two blocks of this
competence: cognitive (body of knowledge about argumentative strategies) and procedural (set
of knowledge-based skills and abilities that allow building argumentative strategies). Gavrilova
A.N. understands the argumentative competence asthe ability of the arguing addresser to put
forward and substantiate a thesis, trying to convince the recipient of a certain vision of a
phenomenon, object or situation, with correct and conscious use of argumentation methods and
techniques [2].
V.P. Moskvin interprets the argumentative competence of an individual as the ability to
substantiate or refute certain statements, implying knowledge of argumentation schemes,
systems of techniques, tricks, manipulative techniques and ways to neutralize them [4].
We think that it is important to integrate two competences: argumentative and
communicative. In this way we define
“argumentative communicative competence”as the
readiness and ability of the intermediator of intercultural communication to generate foreign
language argumentative statements in accordance with the communicative intention (to argue
one‘s point of view, put forward and formulate the arguable thesis, substantiate / refute the
assertions) in situations of intercultural communication with regard to national-cultural
characteristics of another linguosociety.
