Introduction
Word stress is a stronger pronunciation of one syllable in a word, which serves to unite that word phonetically. It is one of the most important phonetic characteristics. Each language has certain rules for placing stress in a word. For competent placement of stress in English, you need to clearly understand the system of dividing words into syllables. It is also worth noting that in this regard, English is very similar, since they both have free stress.
Stress is the same essential element of a word as its sound composition. Word recognition, especially in difficult communication conditions, is closely related to the correct perception of the stressed syllable. In terms of identifying its typology, there are many approaches (American, domestic, British) and in terms of identifying its many functions.
The relevance of this course work is due to the fact that every day we meet with such a phenomenon as stress, which is an important part of human communication, but the mistake is the wrong placement of stress, which reduces the level of literacy and leads to misunderstanding between interlocutors in the perception of oral speech.
Word stress in English has a very long history, and if throughout this formation the English language was divided into dialects, then the stresses in words, therefore, differ significantly in these dialects. In this regard, when studying English, attention is paid to two variants of pronunciation of words, and specifically to the pronunciation of words in the American and British dialects.
The purpose of this work is to study the word stress and the features of this stress in English. The object of the study is the English language. The subject of the study is word stress in the vocabulary of the English language.
Objectives of the course work:
1) give a definition of verbal stress;
2) set different types of stress;
3) to study the features of word stress in English.
The structure of this course work is the introduction, the first paragraph: “The concept of word stress; types and place of word stress in English”, the second paragraph: “Degrees and position of stress in a word. Stress functions”, analysis of the speech of a native speaker, conclusion, list of references and appendices with the text of the analyzed speech.
