The author of the article tries to find the answer to the question of what the digital society is by
the analysis of the elements of its technological infrastructure comprised of communication
networks, big data, algorithms and platforms. Considering digitalization as a driving force for the
development of digital society, the author concludes that it consists of the processes of networking,

elements of the technological infrastructure. Each of these processes is studied separately in terms
of their sociological description. We observe the increasing trends of total mediatization, the all-
encompassing role of algorithms and algorithmic systems working with big data on the basis of
various platforms. In this regard the concepts of metric society and platform society deserve special
attention.
Keywords:
digital society, digitalization, networking, datafication, algorithmization, platfor-
mization.
