Abstract. Patriotism as a social phenomenon originated in ancient times and formed into
a certain socio-historical product, having passed through its evolution successive stages and
forms tied to the development of society. For a long time, factors such as the perception of their
natural terrain, living conditions and household characteristics caused a feeling of patriotism in
people. In a phased development on the concept of patriotism, ideology began to influence,
which is especially felt and continues to manifest itself in the society of our days. The article
presents a review of the stages of evolution of the idea of patriotism, as well as its connection
with the strengthening of the defense ability of the state.
