IMPROVING VEHICLE’S RESOURCES AND BRAKING
EFFICIENCY BY USING IC ENGINE AS AN ADDITIONAL
BRAKE-DEACCELERATOR

Abstract: the article analyzes the braking of ICE when using
it as a deaccelerating brake. It is shown that braking of ICE improves
properties of vehicles, increases brake pad life more than 4 times and
reduces fuel consumption by 5-7%, as well as other many operating
advantages.
Keywords: vehicles, ICE braking, mechanical losses, torque,
transmission.
Introduction. Due to the change of traffic rules towards
increase the permitted speed of cars by 20 km/h, their kinetic energy
and braking performance also increased, which negatively affected
the reliability of the braking system and vehicle safety. Thus, when
the speed is increased from 60 to 80 km/h, the kinetic energy of the
car increases by 1.78 times, and, consequently, also increases the
work of braking and wear and tear of brake pads, discs and drums,
which reduces their resource and increase the cost of their
replacement. One of the most reliability way to improve braking of
vehicle is using the property of braking of ICE engine. The ICE
brake system belongs to the auxiliary braking system, which can be
used either separately or together with the service braking system.
On vehicles with a higher weight, to improve braking efficiency on
downhill slopes, the vehicle's auxiliary braking system is equipped
with a motor brake – a flap that blocks the exhaust pipe to increase
the engine's braking torque.

The main aim for using engine braking to improve safety in
the following situations: slippery road braking; long downhill; and
main and handbrake failure. Frequent use of car braking not only
increases the safety of movement, but also saves resources and
improves the environmental safety of the car due to fuel economy. In
[1] it is shown that if during service braking of a passenger car-taxi
(which make up 95...97% of all braking cases), the resource of brake
pads will be increased by 4 times, and fuel consumption will be
reduced by 5-7%.
