MAY AND MIGHT


We use may or might to say that something is possible. You can use may or might:
It may be true. or It might be true. (= perhaps it is true)

The negative forms are may not and might not:


It may not be true. (= perhaps it isn’t true)



I/you/he (etc.)

may
might



(not)



be (true / in his office etc.)
be -ing (doing / working / having etc.)
know / work / want etc.



For the past we use may have … or might have … :
a: I wonder why Kate didn’t answer her phone.

I/you/he (etc.)

might



(not) have



been (asleep / at home etc.)
been -ing (doing / working / feeling etc.)
known / had / wanted / left etc.



could is similar to may and might:
It’s a strange story, but it could be true. (= it is possible that it’s true)

1/ Complete the sentences using can or (be) able to. If can is not possible, use (be) able to.

1 Gary has travelled a lot. He can speak five languages.


2 I haven’t been able to sleep very well recently.

3 Nicole drive, but she doesn’t have a car.


4 I used to stand on my head, but I can’t do it any more.
5 I can’t understand Mark. I’ve never understand him.
6 I can’t see you on Friday, but I meet you on Saturday morning.
