Aesop’s Fable A man once built a house for his dwelling. The house was pretty, but very small. He invited his friends to visit him, as he wanted them to see the house. His friends came and looked at the house. His friends came and looked at the house. All of them said something about it: - The front of the house is very bad. - There are not enough windows. - The windows are very small. - The roof is not a good one: the rain can come in. - The doors are too narrow. - The ceilings are too low. - «What rooms! the last man said, «they are not big enough for any one» The man heard everything his friends said about his home and then answered: «Indeed, it may be true. The house is small but I have not enough true friends to fill even this small house».
Read these texts. Retell them in the Reported speech. Aldar Kose and the Niggard «Hey, man», Aldar Kose said to the shepherd, «I have two tenger. Please choose me some skinny kid for the money». The shepherd did so. «Thank you», Aldar Kose said. «Now sell me a fat lamb for two tenge and a skinny kid». Well, two tenge and a kid is a good fortune. The shepherd agreed. «Listen, old chap», Aldar Kose told him, «take back the kid, and the lamb, and the two tenge, and give me one goat in return». The exchange did take place. This way, bargaining and swapping, Aldar Kose in the end obtained a good, big ram. And the travelers went on.

One of them, a simple-hearted, good-natured man, complained to Aldar Kose pointing at the other fellow: «A year ago, I was getting ready for a long journey and entrusted my gold to this man’s care. Now he refuses to give it back». The problem is that there was nobody nearby when I handed my gold over to him. That is, there are no witnesses. «And where did you hand the gold over to him? At home or in the steppe?» «In a lonely place behind the aul, near a green grove». «And do you remember that grove?» «Sure I do! I even remember the tree under which the handover took place». «Well, that is quite enough». «Do you think that fellow has all ready reached the grove?» «I don,t think so. It is quite a long way to go». Some more time passed, during which one could boil a bucket of milk, and Aldar Kose asked the man once again: «Do you think he has come now?» «Yes, now he is sure to have come». Soon the complainant returned. «I did everything you told me, honorable man». «I know», Aldar Kose replied. «It already came to me and I already had a talk with it». «Who it?» «The tree». «What tree?!» the other fellow cried out. «Nobody came while I was here. And you didn,t talk to anybody. And the tree can not walk!» «It isn,t the tree that matters», Aldar Kose retumed quietly.
Little Red Riding Hood lived with her mother and father in a little cottage on the edge of a large forest. Her father worked all day in the forest as a woodcutter. One day, Red Riding Hood’s mother baked an apple pie and asked her daughter to take it to her grandmother who lived in the forest.

«Promise me that you will go straight there and that you will keep to the path. Don’t talk to any strangers, will you?» said her mother. «No, Mother», replied Little Red Riding Hood and she set off with her basket with the apple pie safely inside. A little further along the path, the wolf joined little. Red Riding Hood and began to chat to her about the lovely flowers next to the path and about the birds singing in the trees. The nasty wolf asked her where she was going and Red Riding Hood told him that she was going to see her grandmother who was ill in bed. «Shall we have a little competition?» asked the sly wolf. Red Riding Hood thought this sounded like fun and agreed. «I shall race you to your grandmother’s house – you go that way and I shall go this way», said the wolf and set off at a gallop. But, that wolf had an evil plan! The wolf had chosen the quick way to grandmother’s house and was soon there. Then he ate grandmother in one gulp and snuggled down in bed. She came grandmother’s home, but she didn’t notice that the wolf was in bed instead of the grandmother. She caught sight of two big black ears poking out of the nightcap. «What big ears you have, Grandmother», said Little Red Riding Hood. «All the better to hear you with, my dear», said the wolf. «And what big hands you have got». «All the better to hug you with», said the wolf. By now, Red Riding Hood was feeling a little suspicious of her grandmother. «You have very large teeth, too», noticed Red Riding Hood. «All the better to eat you with!» cried the wolf and sprang out of bed and began to chase Red Riding Hood round the room. 9. Read and complete the dialogue answering grandmother’s question who doesn’t hear.

Well into the evening wolves suddenly pounced on the sheeps that were grazing not far from the aul. The herder raised hell screaming and whistling desperately. Teenaged boys and adults arrived at a gallop from the aul. Barking deafeningly the aul dogs, Fierce-Grey among them, came tearing along, a whole pack of them. The wolves went off into the steppe unharmed. The horseman and dogs stopped chasing the wolves by the nearest hill in the distance, in the dim unclear light one could see gray shadows sliding along the high crest of Black Hill. «They came quite early this year», a shepherd said. It was only Kurmash who noticed Frierce-Grey tearing noiselessly along the wolves track his muzzle almost touching the ground. The boy fell behind the horsemen and walked fearlessly into the dark and on to Black Hill. For a long time he kept on calling affectionately: «Kokserek! Lol-see-reel…» But Fierce-Grey never came back to his call. The wolf turned up in the aul at night. Standing in sight of his yurta he unhurriedly scratched the dry trampled earth with his iron claws getting up clouds of dust. He raised his head looking up at the starry sky and breathed in the cool autumn air greedily sniffing the faint whiffs of the breeze coming from Black Hill. The next day they saw Fierce-Grey in the aul and when night fell he went off into the steppe… Nobody saw the wolf the following three days and nights. When he returned he was scrawny and fiercely hungry but as sullen-looking as even before and without the collar. When Kurmash called him by the name he came up to the boy his head lowered as if menacingly. The boy was overjoyed and hugged his short muscular neck. The wolf broke free and flattened his ears but this time even the granny did not scold the beast and began fussing around making food. The way he ate was really and Kurmash stepped back, just in case. «Well, I’ll be damned! There is a wolf for you!» said Kurmash’s father. «Look at beast’s eyes, they are aflame with green fire, and that at broad daylight. It’s high time to skin him, son». The boy shook with the fear that now the elders would not listen to him and kill the wolf.
For a little over two years this went on. At last, one day Claude said: «Boys, we’ve come to the end. Do you understand that? – Absolutely to the end. Everybody has struck – there is league formed against us. I’ve been all around the village. They refuse to credit us for another centime until all the odds and ends are paid up». This sounded like a blow. Every face was blank with dismay. We realized that our circumstances were desperate, now. There was a long silence. Finally, Millet said with a sigh: «Nothing occurs to me – nothing. Suggest something, lads». 29
There was no response, unless a mournful silence may be called a response. Carl got up, and walked nervously up and down awhile, then said: «It’s a shame! Look at these canvases: stacks and stacks of as good pictures as anybody in Europe paints – I don’t care who he is. Yes, and plenty of lounging strangers have said the same – or nearly that, anyway». «But didn’t buy», Millet said. «No matter, they said it; and it’s true, too. Look at your ‘Angelus’ there! Will anybody tell me». «Pah, Carl – my ‘Angelus’! I aws offered five francs for it». «When?»
«Who offered it?» «Where is he?» «Why didn’t you take it?» «Come – don’t all speak at once. I thought he would give more – I was sure of it – he looked it – so I asked him eight». «Well – and then?» «He said he would call again». «Thunder and lightning!» «Oh, I know – I know! It was a mistake, and I was a fool». «Boys, I meant for the best; you will grant me that, and I». «Why, certainly, we know that, bless your dear heart; but don’t you be a fool again».
«I? I wish somebody would come along and offer us a cabbage for it – you’d see!»
«A cabbage! Oh, don’t name it – it makes my mouth water. Talk of things less trying». «Boys», said Carl, «do these pictures lack me it? Answer me that». «No!»
«Aren’t they of very great and high merit? Answer me that». «Yes».
«Of such great and high merit that, if an illustrious name were attached to them, they would sell at splendid prices. Isn’t it so?» «Certainly it is. Nobody doubts that». «But I am not joking – isn’t it so?» «Why, of course it’s so – and we are not joking. But what of it? What of it?
