Exercise 110. Translate the sentences into Russian paying 
attention to the use of the Subjunctive Mood. Comment on the 
types of conditionals:
A
1. If death penalty were abolished, the most severe punishment 
would be life-long imprisonment.
2. If she hadn’t given her testimony, the police could have ar-
rested her.
3. If you had got the solicitor on the phone, we could have come 
an hour earlier and wouldn’t have had to wait.
4. If the witness had seen the suspect leave the house, he could 
have identified him at the trial.
5. If I were you, I wouldn’t wait for him now. I would leave him 
a message.
6. If the criminal had not threatened them with death, they 
wouldn’t have had to defend themselves.
7. If she had asked us, we might have known how to help her, or 
we could have tried at least.
8. If I were in your situation, I might start looking for another 
job.
9. If you had wanted to avoid traffic jams on the way to the air-
port, you should have planned to leave earlier.
B
1. If the UK constitution were not unwritten, constitutional con-
ventions wouldn’t be a code of practice for the government.
2. It is inevitable that constitutional conventions should be con-
cerned with the relationship between the Crown and the executive, 
the executive and legislation.

arch would have invited the leader of the major party in the House of

solve the Parliament.
9. If you had studied the British Constitutional Law better, you 
would know that the leader of the majority party first became Prime 
Minister by convention, but now it is covered by a statute.
