Theoretical Issues of Studying Kazakhstani Toponymy: Diachronic Aspect

The article deals with the history of studying the geography and geographical names of
Kazakhstan in the works of scientists from different eras and countries. The article begins with a
review of the works of scholars of antiquity who made attempts to reveal some etymological data of
toponyms. A small tour of the works of toponymic scientists from all continents who have made a
significant contribution to the development of the toponymy of their country is being made. Further,
the history of the study of territories of Kazakhstan at the time of its entry into the Russian Empire
is highlighted: the works of V.N. Tatishchev, A.I. Levshin, G.N. Potanin, P.P. Semenov-Tian-
Shansky are mentioned. The fundamental works of Kazakhstani scientists of the 20
th
and early 21
st
centuries such as G.К. Konkashpaev, A. Abdrakhmanov, E. Koyshybaev, who researched different
types of toponyms on the territory of regions of Kazakhstan, are considered. Conclusions about the
importance of studying the toponymy of the region are made.
