Theoretical and methodological basis of foreign language education
1.
Methodology of foreign language education (FLE). Methods of foreign
language teaching (FLT) as a theoretical and applied field of study.
2.
History of FLT. Overview of FLT methods.
3.
Connection of FLT with other fields of study.
1. Methodology of foreign language education (FLE). Methods of foreign
language teaching (FLT) as a theoretical and applied field of study
Teaching methodology is traditionally understood as a theoretical and applied
aspect of pedagogy. Teaching methodology studies theoretical and applied basics and
laws of learning in a certain field of knowledge which is presented as a “school
subject”.
Foreign language methodology was referred to as a field of study which
primarily focuses on the applied aspect as its main aim is to find ways to ensure
foreign language acquisition. Thus, the aim of the FLT was to study the aims and the
content of learning a foreign language. The subject of FLT was defined as the
scientific study of theories and principles of foreign language acquisition as well as
the study of methods and techniques of teaching a foreign language. The object of
FLT methodology was the system of a foreign language.
However, in recent years linguists and language educators disagreed with these
notions arguing that outside of the socio-cultural context, language is presented only
as a “formal construct”. The new notion of “foreign language education” was
introduced. The object of foreign language education is complex and
interdisciplinary: “foreign language – foreign culture – multicultural identity”.
These changes were brought about due to the changes in the social demand in
general and changes in the sphere of education in particular. Foreign languages and
especially the English language became a priority in education worldwide and a
career requirement in almost all professions. Increasing globalization has created a
large need for people in the workforce who can communicate in multiple languages.
The uses of common languages are a must in areas such as trade, tourism,
international relations, technology, media, and science.
So, the understanding of “foreign language” as a school subject has changed and
widened to the notion of “foreign language education”. Foreign language education
(FLE) includes many aspects such as:
1) methodology;
2) indicative characteristics;
3) research methods;
4) theoretical platform;
5) system of categories and concepts.
The model of modern education focuses on learner centered development of
students’ cognitive and creative activity. The main aim of foreign language education
5
is creating an efficient model of forming intercultural communicative competence in
a foreign language.
Today, both terms (FLT and FLE) can be used when talking about language
methodology. FLE is generally understood as a wider notion that covers not only
principles and ways of teaching but deals with the issues of students' cultural
awareness and formation of a multicultural identity.
