THE REDUCTION OF CONSONANT CLUSTERS
The reduction of some consonant clusters was established long ago.
1. the initial [w, k, g] may be dropped – write, know, gnat
2. the medial [t, d] are dropped in a cluster of three consonants – listen, soften, Wednesday
3. final [b] is dropped in the cluster [mb] – lamb, comb, dumb
4. plosives [t, d] are reduced if followed by a word with an initial consonant – last time, mashed potato, next day, old man.
5. negative n’t is often reduced before a consonant – You mustn’t do it!
6. [t] or [d] is not pronounced between two plosives – locked gate, strict teacher
7. [h] may be dropped in the following monosyllables – have, has, had, he, him, his, her, in unstressed position – Tell him he’s wanted.
