Abstract.
This article gives the main range of issues related to the modern interpretation
of the notion of equivalence in translation theory. The article relies on the study of Russian
scientists S. G.Barkhudarov, V. N. Komissarov, V.V. Vinagradov and the achievements of
foreign scholars (SnellHornby, Catford, Broeck, SapirWhorf), that, as a whole, creates
a better understanding of the content of these concepts. Today, the notion of equivalence
is given considered time both in theoretical so practical courses in translation. The article
presents the three main approaches to the definition of the ‘equivalence’ in the process of
translation. Each of them is described and analyzed. The notion of equivalence was under
the criticism for several reasons. The opinions of scholars are controversially, some of
them state that equivalence exist whereas others deny existence of this term. These reasons
are considered from different perspectives in this article.
The specifics of the translation which distinguishes it from all other
kinds of linguistic communication, is that it is designed for a full replacement
of the original and that the translation of the receptors finds it completely

identical to the original text. However, it is obvious that the absolute identity
of the original translation unreachable.
