The sole trader is the most common form of business ownership and is found in a wide range
of activities (e.g. window cleaning, plumbing, electrical work, busking). In the UK about 20
percent of sole traders operate in the construction industry, a further 20 percent in retailing, and
about 10 percent in finance, and 10 percent in catering.
No complicated paperwork is required to set up a sole trader business. Decisions can be made
quickly and close contact can be kept with customers and employees. All profits go to the sole
trader, who also has the satisfaction of building up his or her own business.
But there are disadvantages. As a sole trader you have to make all the decisions yourself, and
you may have to work long hours (what do you do if you are ill or want a holiday?) You do not
have limited liability, and you have to provide all the finance yourself. As a sole trader you need
to be a jack-of-all-trades, and just because you are a good hairdresser does not necessarily mean
you have a head for business strategy.
In the United States almost half of all retail sales are made through firms operating under the
franchise system like McDonald's which has a brand franchise. Franchising is becoming
increasingly popular in this country.
Franchising is really the 'hiring out' or licensing of the use of 'good ideas' to other companies.
A franchise grants permission to sell a product and trade under a certain name in a particular
area. If I have a good idea, I can sell you a licence to trade and carry out a business using my
idea in your area. The person taking out the franchise puts down a sum of money as capital and is
issued with equipment by the franchising company. The firm selling the franchise is called the
franchisor
and
a
person
paying
for
the
franchise
is
called
the
franchisee.
Where materials are an important part of the business (e.g. confectionary, pizza bases, hair
salons) the franchisee must buy an agreed percentage of supplies from the franchisor, who thus
makes a profit on these supplies as well as ensuring the quality of the final product. The
franchisor also takes a percentage of the sales of the business, without having to risk capital or
become involved in the day-to-day management.
The franchisee benefits from trading under a well-known name and enjoys a local monopoly.
Training is usually arranged by the franchisor. The franchisee is his or her own boss and takes
most of the profits.

Socialization is the method of learning acceptable behavior from other people. A baby is
born with no knowledge on what conduct is considered proper or improper until he is taught by
parents. Selective exposure, modeling, identification, positive reinforcement, negative
reinforcement and nurturance are all methods of socialization.
Selective exposure is a socialization method that controls what influences a person is exposed to.
This is also known as planned socialization, because it takes effort to decide and implement
positive influences only.
Another method of socialization is modeling, which means the person being socialized sees a
person she admires and chooses to imitate his behavior. This is also known as natural
socialization, because the person being socialized decides on their own who is worthy of
modeling and who is not.
Identification takes modeling a step further. Instead of simply imitating a person's behavior, the
person being socialized starts to identify with that person. They see themselves as having the
same characteristics as the person they are modeling.
Positive reinforcement teaches a person which behaviors are socially acceptable because they are
rewarded for those behaviors with affection or praise. For example, softball team members gives
a person high-fives when they hit a home run.
Negative reinforcement teaches people which behaviors are not acceptable based on negative
feedback. For example, if children make fun of a kid because of a particular pair of shoes he's
wearing, he won't wear those shoes again.
Nurturance is similar to negative and positive reinforcement because it involves both negative
and positive feedback, and that feedback comes from a person who the subject greatly admires,
so their reaction to a particular behavior has a bigger impact.

Employee motivation has always been a central problem for leaders and managers. Unmotivated
employees are likely to spend little or no effort in their jobs, avoid the workplace as much as
possible, exit the organization if given the opportunity and produce low quality work. On the
other hand, employees who feel motivated to work are likely to be persistent, creative and
productive, turning out high quality work that they willingly undertake. There has been a lot of
research done on motivation by many scholars, but the behavior of groups of people to try to find
out why it is that every employee of a company does not perform at their best has been
comparatively unresearched. Many things can be said to answer this question; the reality is that
every employee has different ways to become motivated. Employers need to get to know their
employees very well and use different tactics to motivate each of them based on their personal
wants and needs.
The dictionary Webster's defines motivation as something inside people that drives them to
action. This motivation varies in different people. We can also say that motivation is the
willingness to work at a certain level of effort. Motivation emerges, in current theories, out of
needs, values, goals, intentions, and expectation. Because motivation comes from within,
managers need to cultivate and direct the motivation that their employees already have.
Motivation comes from within us such as thoughts, beliefs, ambitions, and goals. The people
who are most interested in motivation studies are managers of people because they may provide
insights into why people perform at work as they do, and as a result provide managers with
techniques to improve worker productivity.

The way you dress can play a big role in your professional career. Part of the culture of a
company is the dress code of its employees. Some companies prefer a business casual
approach, while other companies require a business professional dress code.
Men should wear business suits if possible; however, blazers can be worn with dress slacks
or nice khaki trousers. Wearing a tie is a requirement for men in a business professional dress
code. Sweaters worn with a shirt and tie are an option as well.
Women should wear business suits or skirt-and-blouse combinations. Women adhering to the
business professional dress code can wear slacks, shirts and other formal combinations.
Women dressing for a business professional dress code should try to be conservative.
Revealing clothing should be avoided, and body art should be covered. Jewellery should be
conservative and tasteful.
When choosing colour schemes for your business professional wardrobe, it's advisable to
stay conservative. Wear "power" colours such as black, navy, dark grey and earth tones.
Avoid bright colours that attract attention. Men should wear dark-coloured dress shoes.
Women can wear heels or flats. Women should avoid open-toe shoes and strapless shoes that
expose the heel of the foot.
Always practice good hygiene. For men adhering to a business professional dress code, this
means good grooming habits. Facial hair should be either shaved off or well groomed.
Clothing should be neat and always pressed. Women should avoid make-up that stands out in
a distracting manner. Hair should be well-maintained.
