The first time I noticed this phenomenon was a few years ago, in St Peter's Basilica in Rome- a 
crowd of people standing round Michelangelo's Pietci, taking photos with their cameras and mobile 
phones. Then last week I saw it again at the Museum of Modern Art (the MOMA) in New York. At 
first, I wasn't too worried when I saw people photographing the paintings. It was a bit irritating, but 
that was all. It didn't make me angry. Then the sad truth hit me. Most of the people were taking 
photos without looking at the paintings themselves. People were pushing me, not because they were 
trying to get a better view of the art, but because they wanted to make sure that no one blocked their 
photo. Was it possible that perhaps they were taking the photos so that they could admire the 
paintings better when they got home? This was very improbable. They were not there to see the 
paintings, but to take photos to prove that they had been there. 
Then it got worse. Now people were taking photos of their partners or friends who were posing next 
to, or in front of some of the most famous paintings. Neither the photographers nor the person they 
were photographing had looked at the art itself, although I saw that sometimes they read the label, to 
make sure that the artist really was famous. At least nobody asked me to take a picture of them 
together, smiling in front of a Picasso! I think that photography in museums should be banned, but I 
also have a less drastic solution. I think that people who want to take a photo of an exhibit should be 
forced to look at it first, for at least one minute.

Swedish fictional detectives like Wallander and Libeth Salander are famous · worldwide. But 
recently real-life Swedish police were completely puzzled by a mysterious crime. Somebody was 
stealing expensive designer shoes from shoe shops in Sweden- but not pairs of shoes, only the left 
shoes, the ones which were on display. The first robbery took place in a shopping mall in Malmo, 
Sweden's third-large city. Staff at a shoe shop saw two men stealing at their boutique. They escaped 
with left shoes which- if paired with the right shoes - are worth £900.

In the end it was shop assistants who pointed the police in the right direction- to Denmark, where 
shop · traditionally display the right shoe in their shop window. "We noticed that left shoes are 
disappearing in the past, but we never caught the thieves," said a shop assistant. 
" Since we know that Danish stores display the right shoes, we thought that the matching shoes are 
probably disappearing as well in stores in Denmark ." Malmo, home to 125 shoe shops, is only a 30-
minute train ride away from Copenhagen, which has over a hundred shops, and many brands are sold 
in both cities. 
Yesterday police finally announced that they had arrested the men responsible for the robberies. But 
Ms Johansson, a shoe shop owner, fears that shoe shop robberies will continue and says. "Shoes are 
attractive to steal- they are easy to move and easy to sell and they have become very expensive 
lately. Also many stores have cut the number of shop assistants they employ." Police in Malmo have 
thought of asking Danish shoe shops to also display the left shoe. But this won't work. All the thieve 
will have to do is move to Germany - where they also display the right shoe ...

Costas Karageorghis. a sports psychologist at Brunei University in the UK. calls music 'sport's legal 
drug'. He says that exercising with music can improve athletic performance by 15%. The music must

According to Professor Karageorghis. music also makes you feel less pain and makes an exercise 
session less boring and more enjoyable.

Music works well with weightlifting and other repetitive actions, but it can also help with running. 
The best example of this is Haile Gebreselassie. perhaps the world's greatest distance runner. who 
used the techno-pop song Scatman as a metronome when he broke the world 2,000m record . But if 
music was so important to Gebreselassie why do other top runners never race with headphones? 
Karageorghis says 'Research has shown that for most top athletes music is less effective. Elite 
athletes focus more on their bodies and less on outside stimuli like music.' So although 
music can help amateur runners run faster and further. Most top athletes prefer silence. 
I decided to try running with music myself. I was going to run a half marathon and a sports doctor 
gave me the perfect playlist of songs for running. When I did the race. I found that some of the tracks 
like Von Kleet's Walking on Me made running easier. 
Others made me want to throw away the mp3 player. When I crossed the line. I had beaten my 
previous personal best by one minute. but was it because of the music? To be honest. I felt it was 
probably because of the extra training.

Scientists in Japan now have permission to treat people who have heart disease with cells produced 
by a revolutionary reprogramming technique. The study is only the second clinical application of 
induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. These are created by inducing the cells of body tissues such as 
skin and blood to revert to an embryonic-like state, from which they can develop into other cell 
types. 
On 16 May, Japan’s health ministry gave doctors the green light to take wafer-thin sheets of tissue 
derived from iPS cells and graft them onto diseased human hearts. The team, led by cardiac surgeon 
Yoshiki Sawa at Osaka University, says that the tissue sheets can help to regenerate the organ’s 
muscle when it becomes damaged, a symptom of heart disease that can be caused by a build-up of 
plaque or by a heart attack. 
“It will excite worldwide attention, as many groups are working in the same direction,” says Thomas 
Eschenhagen, a pharmacologist at the University of Hamburg in Germany and chair of the German 
Centre for Cardiovascular Research. 
The treatment will initially be given to three people over the next year. The team will then seek 
approval to conduct a clinical trial in around ten patients. If it proves safe, the treatment could then 
be sold commercially under Japan’s fast-track system for regenerative medicine. 
The system, introduced in 2014, aims to speed the availability of potentially life-saving procedures. 
But critics say the system is flawed because it allows treatments to be sold to patients before 
sufficient data have been collected showing that the procedures work.

In their technique, Sawa and his colleagues use iPS cells to create a sheet of 100 million heart-
muscle cells. From studies in pigs, the team has shown that grafting these sheets of cells — each 0.1

that the cells do not seem to integrate into the heart tissue. He thinks that instead they release growth 
factors that help to regenerate the damaged muscle.Scientists say one advantage of the sheets is that

they create their own cellular matrix, and can maintain their structure without the need for 
scaffolding made from foreign materials, a feature of some other engineered tissues. 
“It is a very elegant and clever way to deliver cells,” says Philippe Menasché, a cardiac surgeon at 
the Georges Pompidou European Hospital in Paris, who has also experimented with making tissue 
sheets. 
Pharmacologist Wolfram-Hubertus Zimmermann at the University Medical Centre Göttingen in 
Germany, who is also developing an iPS treatment for heart disease, says that the latest trial is based 
on work conducted by Sawa and other colleagues in Japan over the past 15 years. 
Once Sawa’s team has treated its three patients, it will apply to conduct a clinical trial involving a 
further seven to ten people. If the treatment proves to be safe, and shows some signs of working, it 
can be approved for sale under the accelerated system. This allows researchers to bypass expensive 
large-scale clinical trials aimed at proving efficacy, and instead to use small pilot trials to show that 
the therapy is safe and demonstrates an indication of efficacy.
