Exercise 84. Point out the Nominative Absolute Participial 
Construction; comment on the form of the Participle, translate 
the sentences into Russian:
1. The case being rather serious, the solicitor had to hire a bar-
rister for his client.
2. The convict having been sentenced to two years’ imprison-
ment, his lawyer appealed against the severity of the sentence.
3. This case having been defined as a felony, magistrates com-
mitted it to the Crown Court for trial with a jury.
4. The jurors having no reasonable doubt as to the guilt of the 
accused, the verdict was given unanimously.
5. This hybrid offence having been considered by jurors, the ac-
cused was sentenced to probation.

6. The evidence being strong, the defendant was found guilty 
by the jurors.
7. All the witnesses having been cross-examined by the barris-
ters, the trial was closed. 
8. The verdict of guilty having been given by the jury, the judge 
passed the sentence.
Exercise 85. Find out whether the following sentences con-
tain the Nominative Absolute Participial Construction, translate 
the sentences into Russian:
1. No evidence having been produced, the case was closed and 
the accused discharged.
2. Committing a burglary the accused broke into the house 
through the kitchen window.
3. Having been discussed and corrected, the bill was given the 
second reading.
4. The sentence is fixed and pronounced by the judge, the task 
of the jury being to bring in the verdict.
5. Having examined the case the magistrates decided it should 
be committed to the Crown Court for sentencing.
6. A case requiring heavier punishment must be referred to the 
Crown Court.
7. Having stolen the jewelry, the thief didn’t know where to 
hide it.
8. The scene being horrifying, we left the place at once.
9. The police must investigate any case involving death or seri-
ous injury.
10. The district court being the primary link of the judiciary
most of criminal and civil cases are tried by these courts.
11. Investigating this serious crime the officer discovered a lot 
of important evidence against that young man.
12. Seeing that the police had little information against him, the 
suspect denied his guilt.
13. The article being interesting and useful, I cited it in my re-
search paper.
14. Having got the necessary information, the investigator left 
the room.
15. While investigating the crime he found some important evi-
dence.
