4. Innovative Tools to Reinforce Lesson Study

Lesson Study programs may be successfully established, but the organization itself does not simply lead to an

improvement of lesson quality. For more effective improvements of lessons, it is necessary to arrange occasions

to discuss reviews before and after Research Lessons besides improvements of a Research Lesson itself so that

teachers can develop and improve their ability how to make concept and conduct of the lesson. In Fig. 4, the Lesson

Study Management cycle is applied to the Lesson Study program and concrete tools toward the reinforcement are

indicated around each phase of the cycle of Lesson Study management that is described in the chapter 1. In this

figure the author describe two innovative tools for improvement of Lesson Study program: “Lesson Development

Sheet” can be utilized to improve P-phase that aims to improve the Lesson Plan composition, D-phase as Research

Lessons, and C-phase Post-Lesson Conference, and “Concept Mapping Sheet” will improve to C- and A-phase

4.1. Reinforcement of P-phase with a “Lesson Development Sheet”

In the P-phase, as “Plan-phase” in the Lesson Study Management cycle, Lesson Plan composition gives a

first challenge to build cooperation among teachers. As described in the “Micro cycle” shown in the chapter 2,

composing and refining a Lesson Plan guide teachers to a process of Professional Learning Community that means

composing a Lesson Plan is not limited only focusing

on  teachers’  independent  development  or  clarifying

lesson  aims  and  learning  contents,  or  rather  that  is  a

process  to  mutual  professional  understanding  among

teachers as trustable collegiality.

The  “Lesson  Development  Sheet”  is  an  important

tool when you share the processes of preparing a Lesson

Plan  with  relevant  teachers  in  subject  team  or  grade

team,  and  promote  a  practical  research  theme  as  an

initiative for the entire school. The sheet in Fig. 5 shows

how to improve practical research theme (example of

study  theme:  “raising  communication  activities  of

students”) is related to a Lesson Plan or which specific

activity  is  related  to  the  theme.  Furthermore,  another

teacher for the next Research Lesson can use this sheet

to further pursue the same study theme. This sheet can be used as connection between study theme and practice

for all teachers. The sheet brings teachers’ awareness to study theme and identifies result of Research Lesson and

“benefit & loss” from Research Lesson. These continuous challenges drive forward the study.

The “Lesson Development Sheet” has two major roles: the first is to raise an ability of clarifying a lesson concepts

(lesson development skill), related to the Lesson Plan composition. The second is “Concept Mapping Sheet” that

aims to reinforce Post-Lesson Conference by improving an ability to observe lessons (lesson observation skill).

The  “Lesson  Development Sheet”  is  for  those  who  compose  a  lesson  to  share  Lesson  Plan  concepts  with

- compose Lesson Plan

- Pre-check of Lesson Plan

participants so that they can plan a lesson together in team under a research theme of school. This sheet is used in

each phase of Plan, Do and Check, and can be useful tool to share comprehensions among the teachers.

4.2 Reinforcement of C-phase with a “Concept Mapping Sheet”

Various styles for Post-Lesson Conference are tried and refining on it in different schools in Japan and the

world. “Discussion style” is one of the most popular and ordinary style of the Post-Lesson Conference in that all

teachers get together and discuss common issues or study themes of school for better understanding and improving

lessons (see Photo 1). “Group discussion style” is a variation of previous “Discussion Style” but consisted in small

number of group in that participants exchange their own views on the lesson. Normally the people may have more

opportunity to express his/her views in small group and communicate each other (see Photo 2).

“Workshop  style”  is  recently  getting  attention  in  different  schools  to  improve  unsuccessful  Post-Lesson

Conference. This session style inspire to the participants to explore from their concerns and connect their findings

in  network  from  the  lesson.  In  such Workshop  style  of  Post-Lesson  Conference  introduced  often  some  kinds

of  activities  to  promote  participants  motivation  to  join.  Post-Lesson  Conference  should  be  able  to  encourage

participants to learn new ways to observe and understand lessons (see Photo 3).

“Concept Mapping Sheet” is a significant workshop tool that all participants can learn and improve a way to

observe lessons through Research Lessons.

The  “Concept  Mapping  Sheet”  uses  two  coordinate

axes that relate two view points with X axis and Y axis and

that  allows  organizing  your  thoughts  on  four  quadrants.

In  Post-Lesson  Conference,  for  example  “Teachers”  and

“Children”  are  arranged  on  two  quadrants  of  the  X-axis,

and “had achieved! (advantage)” and “should be improved!

(disadvantage)” are on two quadrants of the Y-axis. Then,

sticky  notes  are  used  to  organize  information  instead  of

cards  that  are  used  in  an  affinity  diagram.  Participants

receive  about  10  sticky  notes  and  write  down  elements

based  on  their  observation  records  before  a  Post-Lesson

Conference starts. In the conference, they work in arranged

small groups and stick the notes on a “Concept Mapping

Sheet” to connect commonalities or controversies of their

observation  findings.  This  process  stimulates  discussions

and helps identify differences among teachers for deeper understanding. Each group makes a presentation to share

findings with other groups after the group work for collecting and organizing information.

This is a procedural example of a workshop style of PLC by using a “Concept Mapping Sheet”. This type of

PLC raises awareness to participations as relevant party to the study, and discussion helps to find new aspects that

have  been  hidden. Therefore,  it  is  an  effective  method  that

improves Post-Lesson Conference in action (see Photo 3).

4.3  Renewal  of  Traditional  Tools  of  Post-Lesson

Conference

There are traditional and wide spread Lesson Study tools

among Japanese schools which are too long plasticized and

then seen as like classical methods of Post-Lesson Conference.

However  these  tools  should  be  more  refined  and  pay  more

attention  to  its  effective  possibility.  If  we  could  improve

the way how to use classic tools as well as “Lesson Script”,

“Blackboard Documentation” or “Video Reflection”, we will

get more clear views of our Research Lesson and improve our

teaching skill in the classroom.

4.3.1 Lesson Script

Before a Post-Lesson Conference, all participants receive printed Lesson Script that is a promptly described

lesson document taken during Research Lesson. In the conference, they are encouraged to make remarks based on

the printed Lesson Script. From the script that describes children’s actual words and behaviors in detailed level,

participants can vividly picture how a lesson was conducted and how children reacted to the lesson. Lesson Script

is a recorded journal of the Research Lesson.

4.3.2 Bansho: Blackboard Documentation and Students’ Name Tag Magnet

Blackboard Documentation is also effective to review a lesson. You can use a digital camera to take pictures

of writings on the board after a lesson, and participants to PCL receive a color-printed picture respectively. If

Blackboard Documentation can show how children study or compose thoughts, it can bring an idea of the entire

lesson in a view of the picture. Using the picture, you can search ideas from children’s chalk-written letters or

writings where Name Tag Magnets are concentrated or less concentrated. Also, you can analyze a gap between a

teacher’s purpose and reactions from children (see Photo 4).

4.3.3 Reflection on Lesson via Video

Video Reflection is an effective method to closely analyze individual scenes of Research Lesson. All participants

can view it jointly and confirm findings by replaying footage. Video Reflection allows observers to find details

that  have  not  been  apparent  while  simply  observing  the  actual  lesson.  For  example,  “This  child  usually  does

not listen to others and insists his opinion but this time he listened very well. What was in his mind then?” It is

extremely difficult to catch the importance and deep meaning of relevant scene of the lesson during on-going

lesson observation. Video footage can help to find children’s whole reactions in the lesson in view.

The observers often miss individual learning and growth that children have achieved in every day lessons.

Video Reflection is a key method to capture them because it allows them to outlook the scenes repeatedly with

other participants. Then, they can feedback findings to teacher and children who took part in the Research Lesson

and they can apply them for their further learning and growth (see Photo 5).

These traditional tools are especially effective in the “Discussion style” of Post-Lesson Conference. On the

other hand, the previously mentioned “Workshop style” conference can be called a hands-on method because it is

relatively effortless to introduce and to give certain sense of learning for teachers. While the workshops provide

the merit to visualize a lesson in many aspects by organizing many methods and collectively taking opinions from

participants, these traditional methods are often effective if you wish to track down thoughts or feelings of each

child deeper and to understand their internal aspects. With either way, it is important to analyze the current situation

of the school and clarify a method and purpose of Lesson Study. This exactly corresponds with C-phase (Check)

and P-phase (Plan) of the Lesson Study cycle. If you introduce the workshop style Post-Lesson Conference as just

a new trend, it may end without certain achievements. If you and your colleagues would be high trained and skilled

teacher to observe lesson and children, it is recommended to start a “Discussion style” for deepen understanding

on children. High ability teachers those who find out children’s small behavior or whisper in the classroom can

become a high quality “Lesson Analysis” professional in the further teacher development.

Conclusion

In  Japan,  with  a  long  history  and  rich  professional  background  in  lesson  study  as  school-based  in-service

teacher  training,  teachers’  educators,  educational  researchers  and  practitioners  have  started  to  look  at  lesson

study as an effective model to rebuild schools as ‘learning organizations’ and to give the impression of being for

expanding ‘professional learning community’ and ‘organizational learning’ (Sato, 2006; Sarkar Arani & Fukaya,

2009). This investigation provides a conceptualizing lesson study as change management recipe for doing lesson

study in macro and micro level continuously. The author wish that teachers, educational researchers and teachers’

educators worldwide could respond positively by sharing their experiences of conducting Japanese lesson study in

practice and learning from each other.

Teacher Training Course
